Starbucks and Kirishima Distillery Unveil KIRISHIMA GREENSHIP icoia on January 27th

KIRISHIMA GREENSHIP icoia: A New Community Hub

After much anticipation, the collaboration project between Starbucks Coffee Japan and Kirishima Distillery, titled KIRISHIMA GREENSHIP icoia, is set to open its doors on January 27, 2026. Located in the heart of Miyazaki Prefecture's rich natural landscape, this unique facility is designed to be a place where people can come together and enjoy the surrounding beauty of nature.

A Harmonious Design

Designed with the local environment in mind, KIRISHIMA GREENSHIP icoia offers an inviting structure that complements the area's distinct climate and culture. Visitors will have the opportunity to engage with nature through various features, including a botanical garden, a Starbucks location, and a retail store named KIRISHIMA LIFE STORE ipomea, operated directly by Kirishima Distillery. The facility's roof garden and grassy area create a family-friendly atmosphere, encouraging repeat visits by offering various activities and spaces to relax.

To ensure environmental sustainability, the botanical garden will utilize the heat energy generated from the distillation process of shochu. Moreover, all electricity consumed within the facility will be sourced from Sweet Potato Power, a renewable energy source created from local sweet potatoes. The spent coffee grounds from two Starbucks locations in the city will also be transformed into energy through anaerobic digestion, making this initiative the first of its kind for Starbucks in Japan.

A Commitment to Sustainability

KIRISHIMA GREENSHIP icoia is more than just a new space; it embodies the principles of resource circulation and community interconnectedness. The collaboration project is pioneering for both companies, focusing on creating a haven of tranquility while promoting eco-friendly practices. Notably, Starbucks has introduced a drive-thru lane, enhanced with bamboo planting that allows customers to savor their coffee in a tranquil setting.

Inside the stunning glass-enclosed botanical garden, visitors can enjoy the lush subtropical plants, including the sweet potatoes and coffee plants that are integral to both businesses. Renowned architect Kengo Kuma has artfully integrated bamboo into the design, echoing the philosophy of blending architecture with the local environment and culture.

A Unique Experience Awaits

The concept behind KIRISHIMA GREENSHIP icoia began in 2017 when Starbucks visited Kirishima Distillery for a training session. Over time, both companies recognized their shared commitment to environmental sustainability, leading them to collaborate in creating this unique community hub officially in 2022. The opening on January 27, 2026, is a representation of collaborative efforts and a dedication to the community.

CEO of Starbucks Coffee Japan, Hisashi Morii, expressed his excitement about delivering a unique experience through this collaboration: “Starbucks has always aimed to enrich and energize its customers and the community. The experience offered here will create lasting memories for residents of Miyakonojo and their loved ones.” Similarly, Kunihiro Enatsu, CEO of Kirishima Distillery, highlighted their commitment to creating a welcoming space that fosters joy and connection within the community.

Igniting Community Engagement

What can visitors expect when they step into this exciting new venue? The entrance showcases a captivating design featuring exposed bamboo, leading into a warm and inviting space. The interior incorporates local materials and coffee grounds mixed into the finishing boards, allowing guests to feel connected to their surroundings.

Exploring the KIRISHIMA LIFE STORE ipomea

On the left side as you enter, patrons will find the KIRISHIMA LIFE STORE ipomea, which is stocked with products that enhance everyday living, from gourmet snacks to elegant sake vessels. The intent is to provide items that help customers create joyful moments in their own homes, enriching their daily lives.

Discovering the Botanical Garden

A glass wall to the right leads to the tranquil botanical garden, named Meguri-no-Mori. This serene space allows guests to unwind amongst subtropical plants while overlooking koi swimming in a large tank filled with the area's pristine underground water. The garden promotes a calming atmosphere, encouraging a break from daily life.

Starbucks Coffee Experience

Continuing through the facility, visitors encounter the Starbucks store. Here, a beautifully crafted counter constructed from the same bamboo as the ceiling commands attention. The seating area offers an experience unlike any other while overlooking the breathtaking landscape. For those on the go, the first drive-thru in the area provides the unique experience of receiving their drinks while enjoying views of the landscape.

Rooftop Garden

At the top of the stairs near the entrance is the Lookout Hill rooftop garden. It offers panoramic views of Mount Kirishima and the Okinokawa River, making it the perfect spot to capture sunset moments against a striking backdrop.

Promoting Energy and Resource Circulation

KIRISHIMA GREENSHIP icoia allows visitors to experience an innovative approach to energy use. Operating entirely on Sweet Potato Power, the facility is a shining example of sustainability. The collaboration will extend beyond just the building, embracing initiatives such as producing compost from spent coffee and shochu lees.

With these initiatives, this newly established center aims to foster community engagement, allowing everyone involved to contribute to environmentally conscious practices while enjoying shared moments of peace and joy.

Conclusion

In an era where sustainable practices are essential, Starbucks and Kirishima Distillery are paving the way for future developments with KIRISHIMA GREENSHIP icoia. Through this collaboration, both companies are committed to enhancing community ties by providing unique experiences, celebrating local culture, and promoting sustainability. By building this community space, they are inviting everyone to take part in a brighter, more sustainable future.
