Haikyuza Celebrates 80 Years with 'Kiri Nukete'
As Haikyuza, a legendary theatrical company, gears up for its 80th anniversary, the upcoming main event is generating significant excitement. This milestone will culminate with a spectacular performance of the play
'Kiri Nukete' from September 19 to September 30, 2025, at the Haikyuza Studio located in Roppongi, Tokyo. Tickets for this much-anticipated production are currently available through Confetti, managed by Long Run Planning Co., Ltd.
Theme and Concept
In 2023, Haikyuza initiated a year-long celebration centered around the human potential for connection and resilience, led by the talented Yuko Kuwahara in her debut role as the playwright and director. This year’s theme,
“Exploring the Human Potential for Connectivity toward the Future,” sets the stage for an introspective exploration of love's complexities. Kuwahara’s work skillfully delves into the nuances of affection that morph into dependency and distortion, casting a spotlight on the intricacies of human relationships.
The narrative follows two women navigating their intertwined fates. One is seeking freedom from domestic violence, while the other is on a quest for validation. Their reunion begins a haunting tale that reflects common human deficiencies, the miscommunication of contemporary life, and the inherent imperfections of the human psyche. The title
'Kiri Nukete' embodies the duality of escaping a foggy, obscured reality while also breaking free from dire situations. Though the themes may initially seem overwhelming, Kuwahara approaches the storytelling with a bold touch of humor, making it an eagerly anticipated experience.
Synopsis
The plot unfolds in a once-vibrant home that has witnessed generations of children. Its final young resident bids farewell, leaving behind a desolate director of the orphanage and a woman who has lost her job, seeking solace. They find refuge together, forming an unexpected bond, akin to worn-out rags from times of hardship, bringing comfort in a space that feels elusive and hidden from the outside world. This sanctuary caters to those who have escaped trouble or seek companionship, capturing tales of love characterized by obsession, dependency, falsehood, and wandering, all shrouded in an enveloping mist of uncertainty. The story poignantly explores the struggles of finding belonging while those around grapple with their loneliness.
