Get Involved: Join Fundraising Walks for Suicide Prevention This Spring

Join the Cause

This spring, communities across the nation are coming together for a vital cause: suicide prevention among young adults and the construction industry. The American Foundation for Suicide Prevention (AFSP) has called upon individuals to step outside, engage in fundraising walks, and promote awareness for mental health. This year’s initiative includes the Out of the Darkness Campus Walks and Construction Hike for Hope events, aimed at raising funds for essential research and education.

Understanding the Crisis

Suicide has become a pressing concern, especially among young adults, being the second leading cause of death for those aged 15-24. The situation is particularly dire within the construction industry, where the rates of suicide are alarmingly high. On average, twelve construction workers take their own lives each day in the United States. Through the AFSP’s organized events, participants not only raise funds but also emphasize the importance of dialogue about mental health, bringing to light the struggles that both young adults and workers face.

The AFSP Campus Walks

The Out of the Darkness Campus Walks allow high school and college students, alongside faculty, to join forces. These walks are more than just fundraising activities; they serve as a platform for raising awareness about mental health challenges and enabling participants to connect with one another in supportive environments. In 2025 alone, AFSP successfully hosted 176 Campus Walks, engaging over 29,000 participants and raising more than $1.7 million for the cause.

Tobey Smith, the chair for the University of Central Florida’s campus walk, shares, "As someone who has lived with suicidal ideation, I understand the value of community. Open conversations about mental health can foster hope and encourage individuals to seek help. We are not alone. Together, we can find resilience."

Spotlight on Construction Hikes

In addition to campus walks, AFSP has launched the Construction Hike for Hope, which is set to take place throughout the spring and summer seasons. These events unite community members in a mission to change the narrative around mental health in the construction industry. Participants engage in hiking activities, emphasizing that while strength is an integral part of this industry, vulnerability and community support are equally significant.

Jaime Franchi, chair of the Long Island Construction Hike for Hope, states, "The construction industry is renowned for its resilience. However, prioritizing mental health is vital. Through collaboration with the Long Island Contractors' Association, we aim to forge a culture where mental health matters and empower individuals to reach out for help."

Conclusion

The AFSP is committed to saving lives and uplifting those affected by suicide. Their goals underline comprehensive public education, robust community programs, advocacy through research, and offering support to those grieving. With their headquarters based in New York and local chapters spread across all fifty states, they continue to lead the fight against this silent crisis.
