SUNMI Appointed Principal Participating Organization to Enhance Global Payment Security Standards

SUNMI's New Role in Payment Security Standards

In a significant advancement for the global payment landscape, SUNMI, a leading innovator in smart commercial devices, has been recognized as a Principal Participating Organization (PPO) within the PCI Security Standards Council (PCI SSC). This prestigious designation was officially announced during the 2025 PCI SSC Community Meeting held in Bangkok. The elevation of SUNMI's status signifies a transformative shift for the company, moving from merely implementing payment security standards to playing a pivotal role in shaping them.

A Foundation in Security

For years, SUNMI has prioritized payment security, establishing it as one of their core competencies. The company has rigorously adhered to standards like PCI DSS, deploying their innovative terminals across a vast global market, which spans over 200 countries. This wealth of experience has allowed SUNMI to install tens of millions of intelligent payment devices that abide by the highest security standards. Advances such as enhanced Android data encryption frameworks, cutting-edge remote patch management systems, and simplified compliance tools designed for small merchants have positioned SUNMI as a pioneer in security standard implementation.

Collaboration with Industry Leaders

In its new capacity as a PPO, SUNMI is set to engage directly with other prominent industry players, including Amazon, Apple, and Qualcomm, in the critical standards-setting processes. The integration of SUNMI's practical knowledge—gained from its substantial experience with Android-based smart IoT and payment terminals—will be invaluable in developing holistic security frameworks for the industry. This collaboration will ensure that upcoming standards meet the real-world needs of businesses and consumers alike, addressing key aspects such as Android security optimizations, IoT device authentication, and multi-scenario payment adaptations.

Targeted Standards Focus Areas

SUNMI has identified three primary areas of focus for its contributions to security standardization:
1. Sharing Terminal Insights: A commitment to provide concrete knowledge centered around Android optimization, device management strategies, and adaptations tailored to specific payment scenarios.
2. Supporting Security Innovation: An aim to influence the development of security frameworks that can accommodate and evolve with emerging technologies, including IoT and Artificial Intelligence.
3. Strengthening Ecosystem Security: Advocating for comprehensive standards that ensure security throughout the entire payment value chain—spanning terminals, transaction processes, and cloud services.

A Commitment to Enhancing Digital Commerce

The significance of being named a PPO is clearly articulated by Sam Su, Rotating President and CMO of SUNMI, who expressed that this recognition is far more than a title; it represents a renewed mission. “We will now embed the practical experience from millions of global devices into the very DNA of future security standards, helping build a more resilient and trustworthy digital commerce environment for all,” he stated.

During the event in Bangkok, SUNMI had the opportunity to engage with Gina Gobeyn, Executive Director of PCI SSC, and Yew Kuann Cheng, Vice President for Asia-Pacific. Gobeyn acknowledged SUNMI's terminal expertise as a valuable asset, emphasizing that their field insights would play a crucial role in ensuring the relevance of future standards for merchants and consumers alike.

As SUNMI steps into its new role, it will actively contribute to various key PCI SSC working groups. The focus will primarily lie on terminal and IoT security, ensuring a firm connection between those who set standards and the end-users who rely on them.

Overview of PCI SSC

The PCI Security Standards Council is recognized as a global forum dedicated to the development, maintenance, and promotion of robust data security standards designed to protect payment accounts across the globe. With SUNMI’s involvement, there is a promising outlook for the future of payment security standards, guided by industry-leading expertise and actionable insights.
