Li Gokito's Unique Handmade Picture Book Debuts via Reading Platform Launch

The Launch of 'Reading Canvas'

On April 23, 2025, Bandai, led by President Kazuhiko Takenaka, announced the launch of 'Reading Canvas,' a free platform for creators to submit picture books and connect with families and fans. The site aims to bridge the gap between talented illustrators and a broader audience, offering an opportunity for popular submissions to be transformed into products using Bandai Namco Group's extensive IP expertise.

During the launch event held at Bandai's headquarters, Takenaka shared insights into the service, expressing hopes for 'Reading Canvas' to cultivate beloved intellectual properties that resonate globally. He remarked, "Through this platform, we aim to create IPs cherished by readers around the world. We invite everyone to stay tuned."

Li Gokito as an Official Creator

With the introduction of the service, the event featured guest Li Gokito, a multi-talented individual balancing his career as an actor and artist. He wore a fluffy white top inspired by the character 'Nuru' from his picture book during his appearance. Gokito was appointed as the official creator for 'Reading Canvas,' and his excitement was palpable as he expressed gratitude for the honor, "I feel privileged to be in this role, and I aim to convey the charm of 'Reading Canvas' to everyone. I’ll do my best!"

Fond Childhood Memories of Reading

The event also included a talk session where Gokito shared his thoughts about 'Reading Canvas.' He highlighted its appeal to both artists and families, noting the balance between creativity and product development being pursued by Bandai. Reflecting on his childhood, Gokito recalled, "I was a child who wouldn’t sleep until someone read me a story. My mother must have been exhausted from reading all the thick picture books every night." His nostalgic anecdotes resonated with the audience, evoking smiles.

Announcement of the First Picture Book Contest Winners

At the event, the winners of the inaugural 'Reading Canvas Picture Book Contest' were announced. Gokito praised the two award-winning pieces for their unique storytelling and artistic expression, stating, "I enjoyed reading both works, each presented different styles that showcased the beauty and fun unique to picture books. It taught me a lot about various ways to express ideas as I create my own books."

Afterwards, Gokito presented a reading of his own picture book titled 'My Color,' which follows the character 'Nuru' as he discovers his uniqueness in a world filled with vibrant colors. Gokito elaborated on the book's creation process, ensuring a balanced use of colors and engaging layouts that invite readers to explore with every turn of the page.

Despite his initial nervousness about reading in front of an audience, he captivated them with his calm and gentle voice, transforming the atmosphere into one of warmth and engagement. Post-reading, Gokito expressed his anticipation for such close interaction with adults, saying, "It felt quite surreal to read in front of so many grown-ups, but it was an incredible experience."

As the event concluded, Gokito encouraged everyone to explore the array of picture books available on 'Reading Canvas,' emphasizing that both adults and children could find joy in stories including his own, 'My Color.' He conveyed his enthusiasm as an official creator, reiterating the platform's potential to enrich readers' lives across generations, "I hope everyone enjoys the wonderful world of picture books on the site!"
