Discovering the History of Machida through Archaeology Courses



The fascinating world of archaeology comes alive once again in Machida City! This year, the second installment of the highly praised "Machida Archaeology Course" will be held, following a successful debut last year. This engaging program aims to enlighten residents of both Machida and Sagamihara about the rich historical and cultural heritage along the banks of the Sakai River.

This initiative is a collaborative effort between the Machida City Board of Education and the Sagamihara City Board of Education, focusing on nurturing local pride and raising awareness for the protection of cultural assets. The upcoming session promises to be both educational and enlightening, featuring presentations by five skilled curators from both cities who will share their research findings on archaeological sites dating from the Paleolithic to Jomon periods located along the banks of the Sakai River.

  • - Date: February 21, 2026 (Saturday)
  • - Time: 1:00 PM - 4:30 PM (doors open at 12:30 PM)
  • - Venue: Machida City Lifelong Learning Center, 7th Floor Hall (6-8-1 Haramachida, Machida City, Tokyo)
  • - Cost: Free of charge
  • - Capacity: 130 participants (first come, first served)
  • - Registration: Applications can be made from noon on February 4 until February 18. To register, call the Machida City Event Dial at 042-724-5656 or use the "イブシス" (Ebis) online application system.

The presentations will cover ancient cultural layers from the end of the Ice Age through the Jomon period. Attendees will gain insights into how these eras influenced the development of Machida and Sagamihara, both historically and culturally. It will be an excellent opportunity for those interested in history, archaeology, and the preservation of local heritage.
