Experiential Learning for Parents at Takanawa Steiner Kindergarten Amidst AI Age

In this digital era, where adults are saturated with technology and information, the Takanawa Steiner Kindergarten is proud to present a unique opportunity for parents of 3 to 5-year-old children to experience hands-on early childhood education. Under the guidance of Sachiko Akagawa, the principal of the kindergarten, this event aims to immerse parents in the fundamental learning practices that young children need for their growth.

Scheduled on May 30 and June 13, this event will mark the first time in 18 years that the Takanawa Steiner Kindergarten has hosted such an experiential learning event specifically for parents. The kindergarten, established in 2008, emphasizes the importance of a physical and sensory-rich environment in early education. In today's world, our daily lives are filled with screens and digital interactions, often leading to a decrease in tactile, hands-on experiences.

As adults spend more time consuming information rather than creating, it has become essential to remember the basic physiological needs of children during their formative years. This event encourages parents to rediscover the essence of learning through physical activities such as kneading dough to create bread, engaging in watercolor painting, and experiencing the tactile nature of various materials.

"The children require experiences that are simple, physical, and warm," says Akagawa. By incorporating hands-on activities, parents will gain insights into the world their children inhabit and the essential experiences that facilitate their growth. Rather than merely listening to descriptions or observing from a distance, participants will engage directly with the learning methods that characterize the kindergarten's educational philosophy.

The event details are as follows:
  • - Title: Parents' Early Childhood Education Experience
  • - Dates: May 30 (Friday) and June 13 (Friday), from 10:00 AM to 12:00 PM
  • - Location: Takanawa Steiner Kindergarten
  • - Target: Parents of children aged 2-3 years
  • - Capacity: 10 participants per session
  • - Cost: Free
  • - Activities: Participants will be involved in milling wheat to make bread, practicing watercolor painting, and other creative ventures.

At Takanawa Steiner Kindergarten, we emphasize a structured daily rhythm that encourages children to utilize their bodies actively. Additionally, we provide handmade, additive-free meals and snacks, enriching daily activities that nurture a connection with natural flavors. In a fast-paced world, both children and adults need time to engage their hands, utilize their senses, and slowly reconnect with their surroundings.

This experience is designed to help parents reflect on what is truly important for their child's development. We hope that this event will be a favorable opportunity to reevaluate the foundation of learning and growth in children, fostering deeper connections to both their education and well-being.
