Shanghai Electric Celebrates International Biodiversity Day 2025
On May 22, 2025, Shanghai Electric marked International Biodiversity Day under the theme of 'Harmony with Nature and Sustainable Development'. This initiative highlights the company’s commitment to integrating ecological conservation into every aspect of its engineering efforts, spanning projects from the deserts of Dubai to the forests of Romania, and from the coasts of Selangor, Malaysia to Turkey’s Yumurtalik district.
Shanghai Electric, listed on the Stock Exchange (SEHK:2727, SSE:601727), emphasizes the importance of biodiversity in its projects, taking proactive measures to minimize environmental impacts while enhancing ecological balance. The company’s environmental stewardship was outlined in its 2024 report, showcasing its leadership in environmental, social, and governance (ESG) practices.
Global Initiatives for Biodiversity Protection
Shanghai Electric's approach to biodiversity is woven throughout its global engineering projects. The company evaluates local sensitive species and implements protective measures tailored to minimize disruption during project execution. For example, during the solar thermal energy project in Dubai, a biodiversity protection system was established prior to construction. This system identified habitats for sensitive species and restricted operations to designated pathways and areas, significantly raising employee awareness of local ecosystems.
In Romania, the photovoltaic project in Skurtu was designed with the local forests in mind. Careful planning resulted in the rerouting of cables to avoid disturbing a small forest and to ensure that farmland remained undisturbed. This 56.03 MWp project is expected to supply green energy to approximately 48,000 households while reducing carbon emissions by about 4,150 tons annually, further underscoring Shanghai Electric’s dedication to environmental sustainability.
Innovative Technologies for Ecological Restoration
Shanghai Electric's Hunutlu power plant in Turkey is another testament to its commitment to biodiversity. Situated in a region rich in biodiversity, this plant is home to several species listed as endangered by the IUCN. Employing ultra-low emission technologies, it effectively reduces dust, sulfur, and nitrogen emissions while eliminating wastewater discharge, thus helping to protect the Black Sea's coastal waters.
The facility is equipped with an advanced wastewater treatment system that enables the recycling of wastewater for agricultural irrigation. During construction, Shanghai Electric collaborated with project partners to safeguard local turtle populations by forming volunteer teams dedicated to beach clean-ups and removing obstructions to nesting sites. The company's efforts also included minimizing construction noise and limiting nocturnal lighting facing the sea, showcasing a robust commitment to ecological responsibility.
Community Engagement in Malaysia
In October 2024, Shanghai Electric’s renewable energy project division engaged in a beach clean-up in Malaysia under the guidance of the Malaysian Ministry of Environment. This initiative was aimed at raising awareness about environmental protection and reducing coastal pollution. By participating in these clean-up efforts, the team promoted the company's environmental and operational principles that focus on green, smart energy and ecological sustainability.
Their contributions have been recognized by several environmental protection certificates from local authorities in Selangor, affirming the company's commitment to sustainability and responsible regional development.
Looking forward, Shanghai Electric continues to advocate for biodiversity in 2025, building on the success of its previous campaigns that demonstrate a harmony between industrial development and environmental protection. The company plans to leverage its expertise in clean technology and green manufacturing to support the ongoing mission of 'Harmony with Nature and Sustainable Development'.
