Eastman's Eight Copolyester Resins Achieve RecyClass Approval for Recyclability
Eastman has made significant strides in the sustainability sector with the recent accomplishment of receiving RecyClass Recyclability Approvals for eight of its copolyester resins, including their Renew grades which contain recycled materials. This impactful certification solidifies Eastman's commitment to environmental responsibility and innovative packaging solutions. The highlighted resins, identified under the Cristal brand—Cristal™ EN076, Cristal™ One, Cristal™ One Pro, Cristal™ One IM812, Cristal™ One E, and Cristal™ One E Lux—have been classified as fully compatible with modern PET bottle recycling processes in Europe. Out of these, two varieties, Cristal™ EN067 and Cristal™ EN059, have also demonstrated limited compatibility with existing recycling infrastructures.
The approval process involved independent testing conducted by PTI-Europe and Plastics Forming Enterprises (PFE), which followed an adapted version of the PET bottle recyclability assessment protocol. Importantly, these modified copolyesters do not disrupt established recycling methods, thus positioning them as highly suitable for non-beverage packaging applications such as skin care jars, bottles, caps, and color cosmetics. Notably, these resins exhibit lower crystallization rates compared to standard PET, which translates to enhanced durability, high transparency, and gloss in the final products.
This achievement underscores Eastman's ongoing efforts to align with modern recycling infrastructure while increasing the circularity of plastics. As the plastic industry continues to develop high-performance packaging solutions, Eastman’s innovative offerings contribute significantly to this trend by ensuring compliance with effective recycling systems.
