METAvivor Launches #LightUpMBC Campaign to Raise Awareness for Metastatic Breast Cancer Research

METAvivor Shines a Light on MBC and Promotes Research

In recognition of Breast Cancer Awareness Month, METAvivor Research and Support is shining a spotlight on metastatic breast cancer (MBC), also known as Stage 4 breast cancer, through its impactful campaign, #LightUpMBC. This year, the campaign aims to spread awareness and raise crucial funding for research on October 13, officially designated as National Metastatic Breast Cancer Awareness Day.

Metastatic breast cancer, which occurs when breast cancer spreads to distant sites in the body, poses a significant challenge as it currently has no cure. Treatment often aims to control the disease rather than eradicate it, and ongoing research is critical for developing better therapeutic options and improving patient outcomes. METAvivor, a nonprofit organization, is uniquely dedicated to funding research specifically for Stage 4 metastatic breast cancer, fostering advancements in this area.

On October 13, more than 325 landmarks around the globe are set to light up in the colors representative of MBC awareness: teal, green, and pink. This initiative spans across all 50 states and 20 countries, symbolically honoring those who have lost their lives to this disease and rallying support for those currently living with it.

Among the notable landmarks participating in this illuminating campaign are One World Trade Center in New York City, Willis Tower in Chicago, and even Niagara Falls. These iconic structures will be lit in alignment with a global mission to raise awareness and spark discussions about the realities of living with metastatic breast cancer.

As part of the day's activities, participants are encouraged to capture and share photos of these glowing landmarks, tagging @LightUpMBC in their posts and using the campaign hashtags, #LightUpMBC and #METAvivor. This collaborative effort aims not only to foster community spirit but also to enhance visibility around the urgent issues facing individuals and families impacted by MBC.

LightUpMBC Live

In addition to the landmark illuminations, METAvivor will be hosting a live streaming event titled #LightUpMBC Live, which will be available for free on various platforms including YouTube and Facebook Live. This special event will kick off at 8 PM ET / 5 PM PT, featuring inspiring patient stories, expert scientific perspectives, and engaging musical performances from acclaimed artists.

The live event is hosted by Tami Eagle Bowling, a brave individual who has been living with MBC for over 11 years, alongside breast cancer survivor and Broadway performer Kara Lindsay. Attendees can expect heartfelt anecdotes, valuable insights into the science behind metastatic breast cancer, and a sense of unity through music.

Every net profit generated from the #LightUpMBC campaign and its associated live stream will be dedicated to funding vital research initiatives focused on metastatic breast cancer. Dr. Kelly Shanahan, METAvivor Board President, shares the hope that through research and community support, the narrative around MBC can shift from one of despair to one of survivability and empowerment.

Conclusion

The #LightUpMBC campaign serves as a powerful reminder of the ongoing battle against metastatic breast cancer, urging the public to take a stand, spread the word, and support critical research. Through acts of solidarity and the illuminating glow of landmarks worldwide, METAvivor is championing a future where MBC is no longer seen as a terminal disease but instead a manageable and survivable condition, paving the way for hope, healing, and community connection.
