SP Unveils Nature Playbook for Automotive Sustainability
In a significant step toward integrating ecology into the automotive industry, the Suppliers Partnership for the Environment (SP) has announced the release of its new
Nature Playbook. This voluntary guidance document is designed to assist automotive manufacturers and suppliers in recognizing opportunities to implement nature-based solutions and biodiversity strategies within their operations.
What is the Nature Playbook?
The Nature Playbook is a practical roadmap that provides companies with site-level information necessary to identify, evaluate, and execute nature-positive actions. Encompassing four core pillars, the Playbook offers scalable strategies that align environmental stewardship with operational efficiency, while also promoting long-term resilience against ecological risks.
Executive Director of Suppliers Partnership for the Environment,
Kellen Mahoney stated, "Companies are increasingly recognizing that nature-related risks and dependencies are business issues, not only environmental ones." This reinforces the Playbook's purpose of providing actionable insights for the automotive sector, integrating biodiversity and nature-based strategies that not only bolster resilience but also enhance operational performance.
Development and Collaboration
Developed through collaborations among SP’s Nature-Based Solutions Work Group, the Playbook incorporates feedback from interviews conducted with Original Equipment Manufacturers (OEMs) and suppliers. This comprehensive approach aims to understand the challenges of implementation, funding constraints, governance gaps, and how nature initiatives can be harmonized with broader business objectives.
GZA and
Fresh Coast Climate Solutions co-led this project, translating feedback from industry stakeholders into practical strategies.
Jay Womack, Senior Landscape Architect at GZA, expressed that the collaborative nature of the Playbook development has allowed vital insights to emerge, aiming for an environmentally improved automotive industry.
Encouraging Progressive Implementation
The Nature Playbook empowers companies at various stages of their ecological journey to identify and act on opportunities that align with their operational goals. Rather than enforcing uniform standards, it encourages continuous progress, accommodating varying levels of environmental maturity among organizations. It includes a unique
Nature-Based Selection Matrix to assist companies in evaluating strategies based on difficulty, cost, and anticipated return on investment.
Matthew Paper, Water and Nature Lead at Fresh Coast Climate Solutions, emphasized the flexibility of the Playbook, stating, "The Nature Playbook was designed to meet companies where they are, offering clear, feasible options to help manufacturers and suppliers move from symbolic efforts toward a more integrated and strategic approach to nature."
Accessibility and Future Insights
The Nature Playbook is available for free download at
Suppliers Partnership website. SP aims for this resource to inspire companies, whether they are just starting their environmental journey or looking to strengthen their existing initiatives.
