Luup and Onojo City: A Partnership for E-Mobility
In an exciting development, Luup, a Tokyo-based company focusing on electric micro-mobility sharing solutions, has signed a partnership agreement with Onojo City, Fukuoka Prefecture. The agreement aims to conduct a demonstration project for implementing electric micro-mobility sharing services in Onojo City, with a planned launch date set for September 1, 2025.
Background of Luup and Its Mission
Luup's mission is clear: to create infrastructure that effectively transforms urban areas into more accessible spaces. By providing a range of electric vehicles, including e-scooters and electric-assist bicycles, Luup is committed to establishing a seamless solution for first and last-mile transportation. Its goal is to develop a society where everyone can commute comfortably and environmentally friendly.
Having started offering services in the Fukuoka area in March 2024, Luup has already set up approximately 1,000 ports throughout the region, making it the leading provider of electric micro-mobility services there.
The Need for Transport Solutions in Onojo City
Onojo City is strategically located at the heart of Fukuoka Prefecture and is adjacent to Fukuoka City. The city boasts excellent rail connectivity through stations such as JR Onojo Station and Nishitetsu Shimoori Station, making it an appealing commuter town. However, Onojo faces significant challenges, including increased daily transportation demands, insufficient public transport coverage for nearby locations, a shortage of parking, and environmental concerns.
Besides catering to the commuting needs of its residents, there is also a demand to enhance the mobility experience for tourists visiting the area. Given these challenges, the adaptable and environmentally-friendly transport solutions offered by Luup could align perfectly with the city’s transportation objectives.
Enhancing Mobility and City Revitalization
The partnership between Luup and Onojo City aims to streamline mobility for residents and visitors alike, contributing to the revitalization of the urban area. Under this agreement, both parties will collaborate on several initiatives, including securing ports for electric micro-mobility services, addressing illegal parking issues, promoting traffic regulations and etiquette, and collecting, organizing, and analyzing data related to the services.
Features of Luup’s E-Mobility Services
Luup’s electric vehicle ports are densely distributed across major urban areas including Tokyo, Osaka, and Nagoya, as well as in smaller cities like Fukuoka, Kobe, Sendai, and Hiroshima, exceeding 14,400 locations overall. The design of the vehicles allows for port placement in small spaces, making it convenient for users.
The service is specifically geared towards short-distance travel. Users can reserve their return port in advance via the app, avoiding congestion at popular port locations. A unique requirement for users is the obligation to take a photo of the parked vehicle inside the port upon return, which helps maintain cleanliness and convenience in urban landscapes.
