Exploring the Quiet Shapes of Wood: Shino Nakamura Exhibition

The Exhibition: Hidden Forms in Wood

The upcoming exhibition, "Hidden Forms in Wood," features the captivating artwork of sculptor Shino Nakamura at ESCAPERS ANOTHER WORLD. Shino, who has dedicated her craft to exploring the quiet passage of time through the medium of wood, seamlessly intertwines the realms of sculpture, craft, and Buddhist statue restoration. Her latest collection underscores her focus on smaller forms like vessels, boxes, and lidded containers, through which she meticulously investigates the essence of objects.

In this exhibition, visitors will encounter a collection of tranquil and gentle artworks, showcasing the natural beauty found in the rings of wood, carving marks, and layers of lacquer. These pieces evoke a breathing quality, inviting audiences to experience the soft presence of wood in a poetic manner.

Many of Shino's creations draw inspiration from the small lives of flora and fauna. Objects such as boxes and lidded vessels are not merely functional but seem to whisper the stories and memories that are etched into their surfaces as time unfolds.

The delicate light and warmth captured within these small worlds offer a profound sense of comfort. Viewers are encouraged to visit the exhibition and feel the quiet pulse of Shino Nakamura's artistry, which resonates deeply with nature.

Featured Works

  • - Bird Plate:
This whimsical dish, inspired by Uyghur Buddhist art, takes the shape of a bird, playfully captured mid-flight.

  • - Peony Lidded Container (Red Pine):
Crafted in the shape of a peony, this container emphasizes the striking winter growth rings of red pine, leaving the summer rings understated for a delicate texture.

  • - Rinban Hishi Plate:
The edges of this plate are adorned with “Rinban,” a decorative motif often seen in classical Japanese sculptures, featuring charming flowers that grace the crowns of deities.

  • - Square Rimmed Flower Circular Tray:
Adorned with floral patterns reminiscent of Japanese Buddhist art, this tray showcases designs frequently associated with Indian deities.
