AGFUND Recognized Globally for Advancing Inclusive Banking and Social Impact

AGFUND Wins International Award for Inclusive Banking

In a remarkable achievement for the Arab Gulf Programme for Development (AGFUND), the organization has been awarded the prestigious title of "Excellence in Inclusive Banking and Social Impact" during the 2026 Sustainable Development Goals Awards. This event, coordinated by the World Savings and Retail Banking Institute (WSBI) in partnership with the European Savings and Retail Banking Group (ESBG), took place in Bangkok, Thailand. AGFUND's CEO, Hammam bin Nasser bin Juraid, attended the awards ceremony alongside major financial institutions, including the International Monetary Fund and the World Bank Group.

AGFUND's recognition highlights its important role in providing financial services designed to support underserved communities. Prince Abdulaziz bin Talal, the President of AGFUND, underscored the significant contributions of its founders, notably the late Prince Talal bin Abdulaziz, who laid the groundwork for empowering vulnerable populations through microfinance initiatives. The Prince remarked that this accolade is a testament to over twenty years of commitment to financial inclusion, enabling local communities to generate sustainable incomes and improve their quality of life.

In the journey towards achieving financial independence, AGFUND has successfully catered to over 1.3 million clients and allocated more than USD 1.37 billion in loans since its inception. Notably, 59% of these loans have been disbursed to women, illustrating AGFUND's pivotal role in fostering gender equality and economic empowerment in the region.

The award presented by WSBI, which has been operational since 1924, emphasizes an approach that links financial services with substantial social impacts and sustainable development goals. The foundation of AGFUND’s existence began with its first microfinance bank launched in Jordan in 2004, leading to an expansion into nine countries, including Yemen, Bahrain, Syria, Lebanon, Palestine, Sudan, Mauritania, and Sierra Leone. AGFUND continues to focus on segments of society that have been excluded from conventional banking services.

To further its mission, AGFUND has offered more than 1.5 million loans, facilitated the opening of over 927,000 savings accounts, established 112 branches, and created more than 1,500 jobs. Their services primarily revolve around financing micro and small enterprises, directly impacting livelihoods and enhancing economic independence.

Moving forward, AGFUND plans to reinforce development partnerships and innovate towards digital solutions within banking. By integrating training and capacity development with financial products, AGFUND aims to ensure its clients not only receive financial support but also the necessary tools to thrive in their respective businesses. The organization is also eyeing expansion opportunities in Africa, promoting sustainable financial inclusion tailored to the unique needs of local populations.

As AGFUND sets its sights on the future, it looks to adapt successful strategies in new markets while remaining committed to enhancing the financial well-being of the communities it serves. This award not only celebrates past successes but also propels AGFUND forward in its mission to redefine inclusive banking and amplify social impact across the globe.
