CIEE Launches BridgeUSA Community Engagement Scholarship for Latin American Students

The Council on International Educational Exchange (CIEE) has announced the introduction of a fresh scholarship program designed to foster mutual understanding between the United States and Latin America. This initiative, known as the BridgeUSA Community Engagement Scholarship, aims to connect students from these regions through invaluable cultural exchange opportunities.

A New Opportunity for Latin American Students

The scholarship is tailored specifically for two university students from Argentina, Chile, Paraguay, or Uruguay who are passionate about civic engagement and genuinely motivated to promote goodwill between the U.S. and their home countries. This award will facilitate their participation in the U.S. Department of State's BridgeUSA Summer Work Travel program.

Experience and Learning in the U.S.

The inaugural recipients will experience life in the U.S. during their winter break in 2027, engaging with the local community while working at one of Vail Resorts’ celebrated destinations. This experience will not only broaden their practical skills but also allow them to immerse themselves in an environment that values community service and cultural diversity.

In addition to this hands-on work experience, the scholarship recipients will attend CIEE’s Young Civic Leadership Summit. Here, they will learn to navigate and manage cultural and national barriers while engaging in a substantial community service project designed to benefit their host community.

Giving Back to the Community

Aligned with CIEE’s Community Impact Initiative, the BridgeUSA Community Engagement Fellows will also participate in at least one additional community service activity during their stay, thus strengthening their ties with local residents. Such interactions are crucial as they build authentic relationships and enrich their understanding of American culture, which the fellows can carry back home and apply positively in their communities.

Partnership and Recruiting Efforts

To identify suitable candidates for this program, CIEE is collaborating with WEUSA, a well-established partner in Latin America that specializes in BridgeUSA initiatives. WEUSA will handle participant recruitment and the initial selection process, aiming to ensure a diverse and deserving group of applicants.

Each year, CIEE will rotate the countries eligible for this scholarship program, expanding opportunities for diverse candidates from Latin America. This initiative reflects CIEE’s commitment to enriching international exchange experiences, potentially benefiting many more students in the future.
