Explore Autumn Art at MOMAT

The Tokyo National Museum of Modern Art, popularly known as MOMAT, is all set to launch its first-ever autumn event, "MOMAT Akibiyori." Running from September 29 to November 15, 2026, this event promises a delightful experience for both children and adults alike, celebrating the beauty and insights of art during the fall season.

Highlights of the Event

The event features an exclusive Autumn Premium Collection, where visitors can marvel at important cultural properties. After a seven-year hiatus, three remarkable pieces by the celebrated artist Kiyokata Kaburaki, including "Tsukiji Akashicho," "Shintomicho," and "Hamamatsukagashi," will be elegantly displayed in the galleries. Alongside these masterworks, art enthusiasts will enjoy other significant pieces that complement the season, such as Shunso Hishida’s "Akikodachi" and Kaii Higashiyama's "Fuyuka."

Special Collaboration with Fujingaho

In a special initiative, MOMAT will collaborate with the *November issue of Fujingaho magazine. This project introduces visitors to the captivating world of modern Japanese art. Incorporating around 40 pages, the magazine will feature several outstanding collections from MOMAT along with engaging curator insights and information about smaller exhibitions related to Japanese artists in Paris titled "Ami do Pari: Japanese Artists in Paris."

One of the most exciting aspects of this collaboration is the Dream Highlight Room, where nine notable personalities, including Princess Takamado and artist Hiroshi Sugimoto, will select one piece from MOMAT’s collection to exhibit. Visitors will have the rare opportunity to view these highlighted works in person.

Family Day: A Celebration of Art for Kids

From October 8 through October 16, MOMAT will host the much-anticipated Family Day* event. This year, the event spans eight days, making it an ideal opportunity for families to enjoy the museum. A unique program titled "Viewing Stories" will unveil a range of artworks based on storytelling, with engaging elements and story summaries designed to spark imagination.

During the weekdays of this event, MOMAT's volunteer guides will lead a fun and educational exploration of the exhibitions for all visitors. Between October 10 and 12, a special interactive program will be conducted—perfect for young art enthusiasts making their museum debut. Amenities such as nursing rooms, diaper-changing stations, and relaxation spaces will also be available to ensure a comfortable visit for families.

Artist Talk and Culinary Delights

On October 9, MOMAT will present an engaging artist talk featuring Yoshitomo Nara, the mind behind the popular artwork "Harmless Kitty." Attendees will gain insights into his creative process and artistic vision.

Additionally, from October 23, a delightful collaboration with restaurant La・Mikuni will see them feature a food truck in the museum courtyard, offering delicious dining options for guests before or after their visit.
