U.S. Postal Service to Recognize Columbus Day with Nationwide Closure on Oct. 13

U.S. Postal Service to Close on Columbus Day

The U.S. Postal Service (USPS) has announced that it will recognize Columbus Day on Monday, October 13, 2025. All Post Office locations across the country will be closed in observance of this federal holiday. As a result, customers should plan accordingly for mailing and package delivery needs.

Only Priority Mail Express items will be delivered on Columbus Day, while all regular mail services and retail operations will resume on Tuesday, October 14. Although Post Offices will not be staffed, USPS aims to provide its customers with access to various services through its network of over 2,600 self-service kiosks.

These kiosks, located within select Post Office lobbies nationwide, allow customers to:
  • - Print postage for Priority Mail, Priority Mail Express, and international shipments,
  • - Purchase stamps,
  • - Weigh and mail packages,
  • - Access package tracking information.

In an effort to modernize operations, the USPS has introduced more self-service options at its retail locations. Customers can now utilize features like Rapid Dropoff Stations for returning parcels with pre-printed labels created online, as well as the option to print shipping labels using a merchant-provided QR code. Additionally, smart lockers are available for package drop-off and pick-up, which can be accessed around the clock.

Many of these self-service kiosks are operational 24/7, providing flexibility and convenience for customers who need access to postal services outside regular business hours, especially during holiday closures.

For accurate holiday hours and to check kiosk availability, customers are encouraged to visit the Postal Locator on the USPS website. Further information regarding USPS products and services can also be found online at www.usps.com.

The U.S. Postal Service operates as an independent federal establishment with a self-financing mandate, ensuring that it can continue to serve every community in America. USPS has a responsibility to deliver mail and packages reliably to nearly 169 million addresses, up to six or seven days a week. To enhance its service quality and long-term financial sustainability, USPS is implementing a comprehensive 10-year transformation plan dubbed 'Delivering for America.' This initiative aims to modernize its network and improve customer satisfaction across various mail and shipping categories.

Given that the Postal Service generally does not receive taxpayer funding for its operational costs, it relies on the sale of postage, products, and services as its primary source of revenue. Therefore, understanding the service limitations during holiday closures is essential for all customers.
