Connecticut Convention Center Marks Milestone with Future Vision for Hartford's Growth

Celebrating 20 Years of Impact

The Connecticut Convention Center has officially celebrated its 20th anniversary, a significant milestone highlighting its robust influence on economic development and community revitalization in Hartford, Connecticut. This commemorative event was attended by state and local leaders, business executives, and key collaborators who gathered to honor the Center’s achievements and to envision its promising future.

Since its opening on June 2, 2005, the convention center has emerged as a pivotal venue in Downtown Hartford. As the largest full-service convention space between New York and Boston, the Center has hosted over 3,000 events, welcoming more than six million visitors. The Center encompasses 540,000 square feet and includes various facilities, such as a 140,000-square-foot exhibit hall and a state-of-the-art 40,000-square-foot ballroom.

During the anniversary celebration, prominent speakers included Connecticut’s Governor Ned Lamont and Hartford’s Mayor Arunan Arulampalam, alongside Michael Freimuth, the Executive Director of the Capital Region Development Authority (CRDA), and Len Wolman, Chairman and CEO of Waterford Group, who played a crucial role in the Center's development. They emphasized how the convention center has significantly contributed to the city’s economic landscape by fostering public-private partnerships aimed at revitalizing Hartford.

Governor Lamont shared his thoughts on how the Center has transformed the downtown area: "What we’ve seen is a tremendous turnaround, and this facility has played an integral role in that success. The accessibility of Hartford has now become one of our greatest assets, paving the way for continued growth and opportunity for all."

Local business owners also highlighted the positive ripple effects of the Center’s presence, shedding light on the flourishing relationship between the venue and downtown restaurants and accommodations. Michael Freimuth noted, "The friendly environment created by the staff here brings events back repeatedly. The welcome they experience in our downtown contributes to Hartford’s reputation as a thriving destination."

One of the standout messages from the celebration was the importance of collaboration among stakeholders. Wolman praised the State of Connecticut and the City of Hartford for their ongoing support, emphasizing that community stakeholders, including Travelers and UConn, are vital to the Center’s achievements.

With a long service record, many of the Convention Center staff have been committed to their roles for over a decade—a detail noted by the speakers during the event. General Manager Mike Costelli and his team have accumulated over 800 years of combined service, a testament to the center's stability and supportive work culture. This enhanced capability has permitted the Center to attract significant events, like the Connecticut Flower Garden Show, which now draws over 40,000 attendees each year.

The behind-the-scenes operations speak volumes to the Center’s successful management. Over the last two decades, the culinary team has prepared immense quantities of food, serving up more than 168,000 chicken breasts and utilizing over 373,000 pounds of fryolator oil. Meanwhile, the environmental services team has worked diligently to maintain the Center’s cleanliness, having vacuumed its extensive carpet almost 4,000 times over the years.

The celebration culminated in an inspiring moment— the unveiling of a commemorative plaque, which will permanently reside at the Connecticut Convention Center. This plaque serves as a tribute to the enduring partnerships and the shared vision that has fueled its success for the past 20 years, encapsulating the spirit of collaboration that underpins this vital institution.

The Connecticut Convention Center is a pivotal asset to Hartford, driving tourism, business engagement, and civic activities. As it looks toward the next twenty years, attendees and organizers alike are confident that the Center will continue to be at the heart of Hartford's growth, ushering in new opportunities for innovation and community enrichment.
