NYC's Second Annual SPAY & NEUTER-A-THON
The city of New York is bracing for its second annual SPAY & NEUTER-A-THON, kicking off on November 1, 2025. Organized by the dedicated non-profit, Positive Tails, this event aims to tackle the pressing issue of animal overpopulation in shelters. The alarming spike in costs related to pet care, parallel to rising living expenses, has led many pet owners to surrender their animals. Reports from the nonprofit Shelter Animals Count have indicated that around 5.8 million animals found themselves in shelters last year, often due to financial difficulties faced by their owners.
Addressing the Crisis
Spaying and neutering is not just a personal choice, but a significant step towards reducing the number of unwanted pets. These procedures not only help minimize the likelihood of unplanned litters but also prevent various health issues, such as pyometra and certain cancers in pets, which can lead to costly treatments. Furthermore, spaying or neutering can reduce unwanted behaviors, thereby decreasing the chances of abandonment.
With this initiative, Positive Tails hopes to build on last year’s success, which saw the organization collaborate with 30 veterinary hospitals to perform a staggering 343 surgeries. Executive Director Beth Gould has expressed her ambition for this year's event to exceed those numbers, fostering an even greater impact on the community's pet population.
Community Involvement
Throughout the months of November and December, Positive Tails will strive to connect participants with veterinary clinics where procedures will either be offered for free or at heavily discounted rates. Volunteers from Positive Tails will assist in coordinating appointments and managing logistics to ensure a seamless experience for pet owners.
The organization's past achievements underscore the power of community effort, and with hopes of expanding their network of veterinary partners, they encourage local stakeholders to step forward and contribute. Donations for surgeries are actively being sought, and those interested can easily assist the cause. Anyone wishing to apply for spay/neuter services can visit

This initiative demonstrates a profound commitment to enhancing the health and welfare of NYC's companion animals. The SPAY & NEUTER-A-THON serves as a pivotal reminder of the collective responsibility towards animal care and the importance of making veterinary services accessible to all.
The urgency of this concern extends beyond just the numbers. Each surgery represents a chance for a better quality of life for animals and fosters a healthier community for both pets and their owners. As the SPAY & NEUTER-A-THON approaches, the spotlight remains on the shared values of compassion and proactive action that can spark meaningful change in the lives of not just our pets, but the entire fabric of animal welfare in NYC.
