Fermi America’s Mesut Uzman Discusses Project Matador at NRC 2026 Conference
Fermi America Shows Strong Advancement in Nuclear Construction
Fermi America™, represented by Chief Nuclear Construction Officer Mesut Uzman, made headlines at the Nuclear Regulatory Commission's (NRC) Regulatory Information Conference (RIC) 2026. This event, widely noted as a crucial gathering in the nuclear policy sphere, saw Uzman unveil the impressive strides being made with Project Matador, which is touted as America's most advanced nuclear construction initiative.
In an inspiring speech, Uzman emphasized the significance of Project Matador as the only active large-scale nuclear project with a Combined Operating License Application (COLA) approved by the NRC in over 15 years. He declared, "We are answering the President's call to jumpstart America's nuclear renaissance." This comment underscores the project’s alignment with national efforts to enhance nuclear energy capabilities amidst rising global competition.
One of the standout features of Project Matador is its readiness for construction. Uzman pointed out that the project is positioned to break ground in 2026, provided all necessary approvals are secured from the U.S. government for Korean investments, as per recent trade agreements. This readiness reflects Fermi America's commitment to establishing a robust nuclear infrastructure in the United States, countering international competition, particularly from China, which has been rapidly expanding its nuclear facility construction.
Strategic Partnerships and Global Collaboration
Fermi America has formed strategic alliances with notable global partners such as Westinghouse, Hyundai Engineering & Construction (Hyundai EC), and Doosan Enerbility. These partnerships are pivotal in securing the long lead-time assets necessary for delivering 4.4 gigawatts (GW) of new nuclear power on schedule and within budget. Uzman highlighted the critical role these relationships play in building a resilient supply chain that the nuclear project demands.
Uzman was joined on an elite panel at the NRC RIC by leaders from ASME, Bechtel, Westinghouse, and Doosan Enerbility. This collaboration showcases Fermi America's central position within the national nuclear industry, aiming to restore American nuclear leadership through innovative technology and strategic planning.
Furthermore, in only nine months, Fermi America has adeptly assembled the personnel, permits, and property necessary to ensure Project Matador not only meets but exceeds the goals set forth by the Trump administration’s executive orders focused on revitalizing nuclear energy in the U.S.
Project Impact and Future Directions
With the approval of the second largest Clean Air Permit in the nation for 6 GW of clean natural gas power generation at the site, Fermi America aims to ensure a blend of energy sources, including nuclear, to meet growing electricity demands driven by advances in artificial intelligence (AI), semiconductor production, and other high-energy industries.
Project Matador is designed to not only support these demanding infrastructures with an 11 GW private power grid—combining natural gas, advanced nuclear technologies, solar, and battery storage—but also to do so in a manner that alleviates pressure on the public grid and minimizes costs to ratepayers.
Uzman concluded with a compelling reminder of the need for international collaboration in achieving such ambitious objectives, stating, "We cannot achieve this epic goal by ourselves." He underlined the unparalleled experience of Hyundai EC, which has constructed over 18 reactors globally that met deadlines without incurring liquidated damages, establishing an exceptional track record in the nuclear industry.
Fermi America is paving the way for nuclear energy transformation in the United States, looking to ensure that the nation remains competitive in global energy and AI sectors. As Project Matador steers towards groundbreaking, it could very well redefine the landscape of American nuclear power for decades to come.
