Harnessing Grid-Forming Technology to Energize Wind and Solar Power

The 3rd International Digital Energy Expo (IDEE) officially commenced in Shenzhen today, uniting industry leaders, organization representatives, think tanks, and experts from around the globe to explore pivotal advancements in the digital energy sector. The central theme of the event revolves around groundbreaking trends, technological applications, and benchmark practices aimed at enhancing the quality development of global energy systems.

During the opening ceremony, Zhou Jianjun, the Vice President of Huawei and President of Global Marketing, Sales, and Services of Huawei Digital Power, delivered a keynote presentation titled "All-Scenario Grid Forming Technology, Accelerating Wind and Solar as Main Power." In his address, Zhou emphasized the critical shift from consensus on carbon neutrality to actionable steps in the energy sector. As the penetration of wind and photovoltaic (PV) energy sources rapidly increases, it poses significant challenges to electricity grids, requiring innovative solutions to sustain performance levels.

Huawei has been at the forefront of developing grid-forming technologies over more than a decade, advocating a transition from network-following to network-forming techniques. This approach is crucial in bolstering the capabilities needed to manage electricity generation, transmission, distribution, and consumption. The company's integrated solutions involve advanced hardware, intelligent digital controls, and sophisticated algorithms designed to foster the evolution of energy storage systems (ESS) towards PV+ESS integrations. These innovations enhance grid stability and operational efficiency in various scenarios. Their six essential capabilities include short-circuit levels, virtual inertia support, broad oscillation damping, rapid primary frequency response, black start capabilities within minutes, and seamless grid transitions.

Huawei's grid-forming technologies are not just theoretical but are being extensively implemented around the world. One highlight includes a project in the Middle East where these technologies facilitated the establishment of the world’s largest microgrid powered entirely by renewable energy. This microgrid has been operational for two years, seamlessly handling the challenges posed by severe weather, ensuring a reliable power supply. In another instance, Huawei successfully implemented a grid-forming ESS solution in Tibet's extreme cold and high-altitude environment, which boosted PV output from 1.5 MW to an impressive 12 MW, demonstrating a 75% increase in energy integration compared to other industry solutions.

Additionally, Huawei's latest endeavor in the Philippines, featuring the largest integrated PV+ESS project globally, consists of 3.5 GW of PV systems combined with 4.5 GWh of grid-forming ESS. This project showcases the capacity to deliver a continuous power output for up to 13 hours daily due to Huawei's innovative coordination and black start technologies.

Huawei is committed to leading technological innovations in the digital and intelligent sectors of energy. They have pioneered a full-link synergy model called "device-edge-cloud" for PV+ESS intelligence, enabling efficient energy management across the entire lifecycle of solar plants. By infusing AI into all phases—from planning to operation—the company aims to reduce implementation errors by 40% while enhancing operational efficiency by 50% and increasing revenue streams by more than 10%. This approach aids in constructing safer and smarter renewable energy installations that drive the industry into a new automated era.

Quality remains a cornerstone of sustainability in this rapidly evolving sector. Huawei Digital Power prioritizes quality, harnessing systematic and process-driven capabilities alongside a comprehensive end-to-end quality strategy. This strategy encompasses every aspect of the product lifecycle, from requirement definition to the delivery stage, ensuring consistent value generation for customers. Looking forward, Huawei Digital Power is dedicated to collaborating with industry authorities, grid operators, sector associations, and standardization organizations to refine industry standards, optimize energy market mechanisms, and promote large-scale, standardized, and high-quality development, particularly in fortifying wind and solar power as primary energy sources.
