BrightNight and Cordelio Power Complete Financial Closure on Greenwater Project
BrightNight, a pioneering power and digital infrastructure company, has recently announced the successful financial closure of the Greenwater Energy Storage Project, a joint venture with Cordelio Power. This ambitious project, located in Pierce County, Washington, is designed to provide a robust 200 megawatt (MW) / 800 megawatt-hour (MWh) battery energy storage system (BESS) that will improve grid reliability and support Washington’s transition to cleaner energy sources.
According to Martin Hermann, CEO of BrightNight, the Greenwater project marks a significant advance in modernizing and safeguarding the power grid within the Pacific Northwest region. He emphasized the importance of utilizing storage solutions and digital technology to deliver reliable clean energy on a large scale. Featured prominently in their operations is the proprietary PowerAlpha platform which enables integrated development from inception to operation, allowing BrightNight to efficiently meet the changing demands of the grid.
Chris Hind, CEO of Cordelio Power, echoed Hermann's sentiments, highlighting how the collaboration between the two companies focuses on advancing reliable, renewable energy solutions that are essential for both grid enhancement and a low-carbon future. With the construction phase set to kick off, the project aims to demonstrate the crucial role battery storage plays in accommodating renewable energy integration across the Pacific Northwest.
The battery storage project will provide firm capacity and a range of grid services to Puget Sound Energy (PSE). Craig Pospisil, VP of Business Development and MA at PSE, emphasized that projects like Greenwater are integral to harnessing renewable energy and meeting clean energy objectives, particularly during peak demand periods. This capability is vital for meeting customer needs now and as energy markets continue to evolve.
With financial backing nearing $400 million from various leading banks—including the Royal Bank of Canada, Credit Agricole Corporate and Investment Bank, and National Bank of Canada—Greenwater has officially moved into its full-scale development phase. This venture marks the first project jointly held by BrightNight and Cordelio in the Pacific Northwest to reach a financial milestone of this magnitude.
The Greenwater project is characterized by its connection to the grid through a short tie line to the existing White River Substation, thereby delivering reliable and flexible capacity aimed at bolstering grid stability and advancing renewable energy integration initiatives. Notably, this project has been environmentally considerate, requiring no operational water and aligning with the regional objectives related to clean energy and resource adequacy.
BrightNight and Cordelio Power are actively ensuring a proactive engagement process with local communities, landowners, and stakeholders throughout the development of Greenwater. The project has gained recognition for its thorough emergency management and safety plan, which is complemented by a design that prioritizes low-impact site utilization and minimal on-site traffic.
As development activities continue, the construction and commissioning phases are set to align with the expected commercial operation date of 2026, showcasing a commitment to meeting the essential energy needs of the future while adhering to high environmental standards.
