Taste of Japan: Rice Flour Roll Wins Gold at OMOTENASHI Selection 2026

Rice Flour Roll Shines at OMOTENASHI Selection 2026

In an impressive display of culinary prowess, the Rice Flour Roll, produced by the `Tokamachi Sukoyaka Factory`, operated by JR East Cross Station Food Company in Shibuya, Tokyo, has been awarded the gold prize at the `OMOTENASHI Selection 2026` program. Alongside this standout product, two other offerings — the `Tokyo Station Red Brick Pound Cake` and `Fruits Snowball` — also secured awards, marking a significant achievement for the factory.

The Rice Flour Roll, made with 100% Uonuma Koshihikari rice flour sourced from Tokamachi, offers a light and delightful dessert experience. This frozen treat can be savored as is, like ice cream, or thawed to enjoy as a traditional roll cake. The product's unique composition is complemented by soy cream derived from soy milk and is crafted rigorously to meet allergenic standards, ensuring it's gluten-free and suitable for various dietary restrictions.

How the Awards Recognized Exceptional Quality

The OMOTENASHI Selection 2026 awards aim to discover and promote products and services that embody Japan's hospitality spirit. Established in 2015, the program evaluates entries based on practicality and the cultural narratives they convey. This year, the Rice Flour Roll was praised for its accessibility, being conveniently purchased from vending machines at train stations, and for its emphasis on Japanese hospitality through allergen considerations.

The Tokyo Station Red Brick Pound Cake was another impressive contender, embodying the iconic red brick of the Tokyo Station. Sold for 1,380 yen, this cake is a testament to Japan's dessert quality, offering a sophisticated flavor enhanced by rich caramel and butter notes. Its clear identity reflects the location's essence, making it an ideal souvenir that captures the spirit of Tokyo.

The `Fruits Snowball`, priced at 1,600 yen per box, represents a premium line made from high-quality rice flour, masterfully combined with almond flour and French butter. This product tantalizes with layers of dried fruit and cinnamon, delivering an exquisite taste that crumbles like snowflakes on the palate, wrapped in a stylish package that conveys the essence of Japanese culture.

Future Directions

The `Tokamachi Sukoyaka Factory`, part of JR East Group's initiatives for regional revitalization, opened in 2014 and continues to focus on delivering high-quality food products. They prioritize using local ingredients to create sweets while maintaining strict allergenic guidelines. Looking ahead, they aim to spread the unique culinary culture of Tokamachi, Niigata both domestically and globally, promoting not just their products but also the rich traditions and qualities of local food.
