A New Model of Health Management for Distributed Workforce
In today's corporate environment, ensuring effective communication and awareness of health among employees presents a significant challenge, especially for companies with multiple locations. OM Network Inc., headquartered in Niigata City, is tackling this issue head-on by forming a joint relay marathon team that crosses the geographical divide between its Tokyo and Niigata offices. This initiative has emerged as a novel model for health management, promoting both physical well-being and communication among employees.
Sharing Health Awareness Across Locations
The sedentary nature of desk-based work has led to widespread concerns about a lack of physical activity among staff. Last year, through a spontaneous decision, employees from the Tokyo headquarters participated in a relay marathon. This experience highlighted the importance of boosting organizational health awareness as a collective, rather than focusing individually. To expand this initiative, OM Network encouraged participation from their Niigata headquarters this year, linking employees who rarely meet face-to-face through a shared goal.
By assigning a baton for the marathon, the goal was to enhance health management awareness and foster inter-office communication simultaneously. Every team member committed to training, leading up to a challenging relay race where they took turns covering a distance of 1.6 kilometers. On race day, members who usually have little interaction rallied together at the course side, cheering encouragingly as runners crossed the finish line. This process, more than the rankings, brought the two offices closer together through a shared goal.
Transformation Among Participants from Niigata and Tokyo
Feedback from team participants highlighted the value of their shared experience. One employee said,
“Even though Tokyo and Niigata are different locations, striving towards one goal allowed us to share a deep sense of accomplishment beyond our regular work.” Another noted,
“I felt an enhanced sense of teamwork compared to last year. Despite the challenges, it was genuinely enjoyable.” Participants reported increased personal health awareness and expressed interest in continuing their exercise habits moving forward. Moreover, even those unable to participate voiced excitement, showing interest in joining next year, signaling a broader company-wide focus on health.
Expanding the Circle of Wellness for All Employees
The baton handed off in the marathon represented more than just a distance of 38 kilometers; it was a symbol of the connections and commitment to health between employees. Building on the success of the joint Tokyo and Niigata teams, plans are in place for an even larger participation next year. OM Network is also considering hosting walking events and implementing regular exercise programs that promote a healthy working environment for all employees, regardless of location.
A Message to Our Readers
Initiatives for health management and employee communication can start small, just like the relay baton. Consider planning events that engage team members from different locations to work together on a common project. Taking that step can strengthen your company and foster unity among employees.
