In 2025, the Japan International Cooperation Agency (JICA) will commemorate the 60th anniversary of its Volunteer Corps. To celebrate this milestone, a round table was convened on October 6, featuring returned volunteers from various fields who shared their experiences and insights on the significance of the program. Notably, JICA introduced its new initiative, the Science and Technology Cooperation Corps.

The Purpose and Vision of JICA


At the outset of the round table, Takuya Otsuka, the Secretary-General of the JICA Volunteer Corps, reiterated the organization's primary objectives, which include contributing to the development and revitalization of developing countries, fostering mutual understanding, and promoting social contributions through volunteer experiences. He emphasized the principle of working “together with local people” and the ambition to enhance vitality in both Japan and abroad.

Engaging Returned Volunteers: Diverse Voices on the Impact of Service


Four returned volunteers from various professions took the stage, each sharing narratives about their decision to join the Volunteer Corps, the lessons learned during their assignments, and how these experiences have influenced their current endeavors.

Presenter: Tomohiko Sugishita - Doctor

After graduating from Tohoku University in 1990, Tomohiko Sugishita was dispatched to Malawi as a JICA volunteer. With the distinction of being the only surgeon in the area, he has transitioned to a community-focused practice back in Japan, where he addresses the challenges posed by an aging population. He is committed to enhancing medical access in remote areas, exemplifying the Continued impact of JICA's work.

Presenter: Erika Yoshinari - Entrepreneur

After earning her degree in agriculture from Hokkaido University, Erika Yoshinari tackled urban environmental issues in Cambodia by promoting environmental education and training local staff. She is committed to raising awareness about effective waste management and is dedicated to advocating for sustainable forestry practices in Japan, highlighting the importance of young individuals in this sector.

Presenter: Saori Okawara - Environmental Educator

Developing a passion for wildlife management, Saori Okawara aimed to educate others about the environment during her volunteer tenure in Peru. Although her work was disrupted by the pandemic, she has continued to promote animal welfare and conservation efforts at Asahiyama Zoo, where she aims to educate guests on pressing environmental issues.

Presenter: Taketo Yamamoto - Media Producer

Taketo Yamamoto has leveraged his experience in media to bridge cultural gaps between Japan and Vietnam. As a volunteer, he focused on creating engaging content that resonates with audiences, which has now evolved into a substantial social media presence. He believes in utilizing his platform to foster mutual understanding between the two nations.

Launching the Science and Technology Cooperation Corps


The round table culminated in the introduction of the Science and Technology Cooperation Corps by Takayuki Uchiyama, JICA's domestic deputy director. This new initiative aims to facilitate international collaboration in education and research, sending young Japanese researchers to developing countries to mentor local scholars and advance collaborative projects.

The Significance of JICA's 60-Year Legacy


As JICA celebrates six decades of its Volunteer Corps, it emphasizes the theme “The Power to Change the World and Japan” through various activities planned throughout the year. The 60th anniversary ceremony is to take place on November 13 at the Tokyo International Forum, showcasing JICA's commitment to enhancing global and local communities through volunteer engagement.
