Taiwan Strengthens 6G Initiatives at the 2026 EuCNC and 6G Summit

At the recently concluded 2026 EuCNC & 6G Summit, the Industrial Technology Research Institute (ITRI) of Taiwan made significant strides in promoting the island's role within the evolving 6G landscape. This event spotlighted Taiwan's capabilities in 6G innovation, aiming to establish robust international partnerships essential for the next generation of communications.

Leading a diverse delegation encompassing individuals from various sectors including industry representatives, academia, and research institutes, ITRI facilitated noteworthy collaborations between Taiwanese organizations and their European counterparts. A pivotal moment at the summit was the formalization of a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) between the European 6G Smart Networks and Services Industry Association (6G-IA) and Taiwan's 6G Industry Forum (6GIF). This agreement highlights both parties' commitment to advancing 6G technology development, conducting international trials, and aligning standards, thereby enriching the symbiotic relationship between the Taiwanese and European 6G ecosystems.

In addition to this MoU, ITRI signed a Cooperation Agreement with TNO (Dutch Organisation for Applied Scientific Research) under the Future Network Services (FNS) program. This partnership aims to enhance collaborative efforts focusing on integrated sensing and communications (ISAC), targeting specific use cases that require joint research and development initiatives. The agreement is expected to yield significant technical validations while also contributing to future standardization efforts.

ITRI also hosted a dedicated session focusing on Taiwan's advancements, which brought together leading experts from multiple backgrounds to discuss various 6G technologies. The topics covered included Non-Terrestrial Networks (NTN), ISAC, and AI-driven Radio Access Networks (AI-RAN). This forum allowed for comprehensive discussions on the challenges and possibilities within the burgeoning sphere of 6G, facilitating valuable network opportunities for future collaboration.

Pang-An Ting, ITRI's Vice President and General Director of Information and Communications Research Laboratories, expressed enthusiasm about the event, stating, ‘Global 6G development is entering a new phase driven by international validation and ecosystem collaboration.’ He emphasized how the amalgamation of communication, artificial intelligence, sensing, and satellite technologies is pivotal in advancing innovation and aligning global standards.

Another highlight of ITRI's participation included the showcasing of groundbreaking 6G technologies, such as advanced base station chipsets and cutting-edge ISAC systems. For instance, the ITRI-devised 6G base station chipset integrates a radio-frequency front-end optimally designed to increase transmission capacity to nearly five times that of existing 5G systems. This remarkable leap offers the potential for enhanced data throughput while catering to future demands in telecommunications.

Likewise, the presented ISAC system integrates communication infrastructure with real-time sensing capabilities, augmented by intelligent algorithms. Demonstrable applications highlighted during the summit spanned drone detection techniques, low-altitude airspace monitoring, and indoor positioning. These technologies showcase far-reaching potential applications spanning smart transportation, public safety measures, and efficient airspace management, fulfilling both immediate and long-term strategic needs.

As the event concluded, ITRI’s contributions and collaborative efforts were unequivocally positioned as significant to Taiwan's forward trajectory in the global telecommunications landscape, emphasizing the island's commitment to not only participate but lead in shaping the future of 6G technology.
