6th World Environment Summit Set to Promote Sustainable Development in 2026

The Upcoming 6th World Environment Summit: A Call for Global Cooperation

The World Environment Summit Executive Committee has officially announced the hosting of the 6th World Environment Summit, set to take place on June 24-25, 2026. This year's event will be co-hosted with DEVNET International, an NGO committed to promoting sustainable societal development globally. The venue will be the International Conference Room and Multipurpose Hall of the House of Representatives in Japan.

Since its inception in February 2020, the World Environment Summit has aimed to illuminate connections in a world disrupted by the COVID-19 pandemic. It encourages collaboration among organizations and companies dedicated to the Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs) while serving as an international platform for dialogue on environmental concerns stemming from Japan. Past events have seen participation from numerous ambassadors and politicians, lending credibility and weight to discussions.

The previous summit, the 5th World Environment Summit held in February 2025, successfully attracted around 120 attendees, including ambassadors, parliamentarians, business leaders, and researchers. Building on this foundation, the 6th summit promises a deeper international and public engagement. The collaboration with DEVNET International enhances this vision, as the NGO has been instrumental in social and economic development for over three decades, working closely with entities like the United Nations.

Under the leadership of its new president, Akihiro Akikawa, who moved the headquarters from Rome to Tokyo in 2019, DEVNET International has also garnered consultative status with the ECOSOC. The association with notable figures such as Roberto Savio, co-founder of IPS (Inter Press Service), and Akihiro Akikawa assures authoritative coverage and news coverage of the summit from various respected platforms.

The current global landscape faces mounting crises, including environmental threats, armed conflicts, and economic instability. In this context, the 6th World Environment Summit is poised to issue joint statements on peace and environmental preservation. This initiative seeks to present recommendations from civil society, international agencies, experts, and cultural figures that support humanity and Planet Earth in innovative ways distinct from government negotiations.

The summit will transcend mere discussions on environmental issues, aiming to explore intertwined factors such as peace, economics, education, culture, technology, and community sustainability, ultimately redefining visions for future societies. The details of speakers and programs will be revealed in a subsequent press release.

Facing simultaneous crises of environment and peace, the 6th World Environment Summit stands at a critical junction. The call for global solidarity over division and for hope over despair resonates strongly as the summit intends to share this message with the world, starting from Japan.
