Featherstone Foundation Celebrates Young Scholars with $63,000 in Scholarships

Celebrating the Future: Featherstone Foundation's Generous Scholarships for Young Scholars

On August 8, 2025, the Featherstone Foundation, a distinguished nonprofit organization, proudly announced the recipients of the 2025 Featherstone College Scholarships. This year, a remarkable total of $63,000 was awarded, providing financial assistance to some of Baltimore’s most promising students as they embark on their academic journeys. This annual event serves as a celebration of educational excellence within the community and highlights the transformative power of education.

Honoring Exceptional Individuals

The ceremony featured WBAL-TV 11 News Anchor and Reporter Jason Newton as the esteemed emcee, who guided the program showcasing the incredible achievements of the awardees. Among the significant moments was the inaugural presentation of the Featherstone Historic Achievement Award, awarded to West Muhammad. At just 14 years old, West made history as the youngest freshman ever to enroll at Coppin State University, where he has chosen to pursue a degree in cybersecurity engineering. His extraordinary journey exemplifies the foundation's commitment to fostering education and setting new precedents for aspiring students.

In addition to West, the 2025 Featherstone Changemaker Award was presented to Travis E. Mitchell, an Emmy® Award-winning executive producer and senior vice president at Maryland Public Television. This award recognizes individuals who not only strive for personal excellence but also work to enact meaningful change within their communities. Janet Currie, president of Bank of America Greater Maryland, expressed her pride in presenting the awards, stating, “Both West Muhammad and Travis epitomize the values of leadership and innovation. Their stories will serve as an inspiration for future generations.”

Expanding Access to Education

Kurt L. Schmoke, president of The University of Baltimore, opened the event with remarks emphasizing the importance of education in achieving individual and communal success. Furthermore, Rodrigo Mendivil Ocampo, chief of the Consular Section at the Embassy of Mexico, contributed special awards which reinforced the multilateral support for education in the region.

Adrian M. McLemore, program associate at the Annie E. Casey Foundation, also highlighted the foundation's initiatives, asserting that the Featherstone Foundation's efforts are pivotal in expanding educational access and shaping future leaders in Baltimore. He stated, “Their work is not only about changing individual lives but about strengthening the future of our entire city.”

The core mission of the Featherstone Foundation revolves around creating economic opportunities and empowering the next generation of leaders. David Rosario, an agent at State Farm, echoed this sentiment, proudly stating, “State Farm supports the Featherstone Foundation in their critical work to advance society.” The funds provided through the scholarships aim to provide these young leaders with the means needed to pursue higher education and break barriers that may stand in their way.

Recognizing Bright Young Minds

This year's scholarship recipients hail from notable institutions such as Coppin State University, Loyola University Maryland, Morgan State University, The University of Baltimore, and Towson University. Their achievements will be honored at the Featherstone Awards Ceremony at The University of Baltimore, scheduled for later today at 4 PM.
