KIPP North Carolina Announces Launch of First Electric School Buses for Students
KIPP North Carolina Launches Electric School Buses
In an exciting step towards sustainability and improved transportation, KIPP North Carolina Public Schools has announced the launch of three brand new electric school buses. The formal unveiling took place during a ribbon-cutting ceremony held at KIPP Durham College Prep on December 4, 2025. This event marks a significant milestone in the district’s commitment to improving the educational experience for its students through eco-friendly initiatives.
This ground-breaking project was made possible through a collaboration between KIPP and Highland Electric Fleets, recognized as North America's foremost provider of Electrification-as-a-Service (EaaS). Key local partners Duke Energy and Miller Electric also contributed to the effort, facilitating the integration of these electric buses into the school district’s existing fleet. Delivered by Carolina Thomas, these 72-passenger Thomas Built electric buses come equipped with everything necessary for daily operations, including three newly installed Zerova charging stations.
The introduction of electric buses into the fleet represents a significant enhancement for the district, with the capacity to serve around 216 of its roughly 3,000 students each day. Not only do these electric vehicles offer a quieter and more enjoyable ride, but they also reduce noise pollution in school zones and surrounding communities, demonstrating a commitment to fostering a conducive learning environment.
Dr. Fabby Williams, the Chief Executive Officer of KIPP North Carolina Public Schools, articulated the organization’s dedication to student well-being, stating, "Every decision we make at KIPP North Carolina begins with one question: What creates the best experience for our students? These new electric buses are a powerful answer. They provide our scholars with quieter, cleaner, and more comfortable rides while committing to a sustainable future for our communities." This sentiment underscores KIPP’s belief in ensuring excellence in every facet of students' educational experiences.
The financial aspect of this transformative project received a boost from the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency's (EPA) Clean School Bus Program, which allocated approximately $1 million to support the electric school bus rollout. This financial assistance not only enables KIPP to introduce three electric buses in Durham but also extends to five buses serving KIPP Pride High School in Gaston and another five for KIPP Halifax, showcasing the program's wide-reaching impact.
Matt Stanberry, Senior Vice President of Market Development at Highland Electric Fleets, expressed optimism about the integration of electric buses, noting that they would contribute to the district by lowering operational costs while providing smoother and quieter rides on essential routes.
The ribbon-cutting ceremony featured speakers from KIPP and partnering organizations, and attendees were invited to tour the newly installed charging stations and even take a test ride on the new electric buses. This hands-on experience allowed participants to witness firsthand the potential benefits of electric transportation and how it fits into KIPP's larger mission to support students and their families.
