Exploring the Heartfelt Tale of 'War Bride' Starring Nao and Eiji Wentz

Introduction

As we approach the 80th anniversary of the end of World War II, a remarkable story of true love is set to take the stage. The acclaimed theater group, Chocolate Cake, led by the talented Yusuke Hizawa and Ken Furukawa, brings to life the tale of a war bride—a Japanese woman who crossed oceans and faced challenges for love.

The play titled 'WAR BRIDE – The Bridge Between America and Japan: Keiko Haan' will take place from August 5 to August 27, 2025, at the Yomiuri Otemachi Hall, located in Chiyoda, Tokyo. Tickets are currently available on the Confetti platform, managed by Long Run Planning Co., Ltd.

The Story Behind 'War Bride'

The narrative centers on Keiko Haan, a 94-year-old woman who married a U.S. soldier in 1951 when she was just 20 years old. At that time, being in a relationship with an enemy soldier came with its stigma, and Keiko faced derogatory labels simply for walking beside an American. This play not only explores her decision to marry a soldier from an adversarial nation but also sheds light on her life in America, where she faced severe racial discrimination.

In her words, “I wanted to be a woman who could be proud of Japan and also make America proud.” The show dives into the complexities of her life as a resilient woman bridging two cultures amidst post-war upheaval.

A Unique Theatrical Experience

What makes this adaptation even more special is the participation of Nao in the role of Keiko. Earlier this year, Nao traveled to America to meet Keiko in person, listening to her incredible life story. This connection adds authenticity and depth to her performance, infused with the real emotions and experiences of a woman who has lived through turbulent times.

On the other hand, the role of Frank, the American soldier who marries Keiko, is portrayed by Eiji Wentz, whose recent study in the UK has bolstered his acting abilities. Having returned to Japan, Wentz is full of enthusiasm for this portrayal, aiming to convey the testament of love that survived through the chaos of war.

A Creative Team Behind the Show

The visionary direction and script for 'WAR BRIDE' come from the award-winning duo Yusuke Hizawa and Ken Furukawa, recognized for their impactful storytelling based on historical events. The Chocolate Cake theater group is celebrated not only in Japan but also internationally for their compelling narratives, making this a highly anticipated production.
