Special Lecture by Former Japan News Editor Michinobu Yanagisawa

Special Lecture Announcement



On September 27, 2023, at 10:30 AM, the Nichibei Institute of Language Education in Shinjuku, Tokyo, is hosting a special lecture by Michinobu Yanagisawa, the former editor of the Japan News. This lecture marks the third event celebrating the institute's 80th anniversary.

Lecture Theme and Format


The theme of the lecture is "Enhancing English Skills Through a Commitment to Facts - Insights from the Editing Room of an English Newspaper." The lecture will be conducted in a hybrid format, allowing participants to join either in-person or online. The classroom has a capacity of 30 attendees while the online session can accommodate 50 participants. Registration for both formats opens on August 20, and spots are filled on a first-come, first-served basis. Notably, attendance for the online session will be free, so early registration is encouraged.

About Michinobu Yanagisawa


Mr. Yanagisawa has a rich background in journalism, having served as a foreign correspondent in cities like Cairo, Rome, New York, and London. Before his retirement in May of this year, he was the editor-in-chief of the Japan News as well as the head of the English newspaper division at Yomiuri Shimbun. Currently, he is a senior researcher at the institute's Research Institute. From 2018 to 2020, he also taught a course in news English at Nihon University’s College of Law.

Previous and Upcoming Speakers


The 80th-anniversary events previously featured distinguished speakers, such as Masakazu Osugi, known for his work on NHK radio's English conversation programs, and Akira Toyama, who has contributed to programs like "One Million People’s English". Additionally, another special event is planned for December.

During this upcoming lecture, the session will be moderated by Toshi Sugita, a special lecturer at the Nichibei Institute, who offers ongoing courses like "Modern Business English."
