Samaritan's Purse Launches Emergency Field Hospital in Venezuela for Earthquake Victims

Inauguration of Samaritan's Purse Emergency Field Hospital in Venezuela

On July 1, 2026, the international Christian humanitarian organization Samaritan's Purse opened its Emergency Field Hospital in La Guaira, Venezuela, ready to treat victims affected by the devastating earthquakes that struck the region just days prior. The dual earthquakes caused catastrophic destruction, claiming over 1,700 lives and displacing thousands of families in dire need of medical assistance. Currently, nearly 50,000 individuals are still missing, with search and rescue operations ongoing.

Franklin Graham, president of Samaritan's Purse, expressed his heartbreak at the immense destruction witnessed in Venezuela, emphasizing that hundreds of buildings have collapsed while thousands have received damages, leading to widespread devastation. He stated, “The need is enormous, and we are prepared to offer vital surgical care to the injured while reminding families that they are not alone, as God loves them.”

The Emergency Field Hospital is equipped with two operating rooms, 56 patient beds, an intensive care unit, a pharmacy, and a laboratory, allowing the medical team to provide comprehensive care in a critical time of necessity. Over 40 disaster response specialists are stationed in Venezuela, with additional support arriving daily, as the organization works tirelessly to assist in the recovery phase.

Alongside medical care, Samaritan’s Purse is also distributing essential supplies such as shelter materials, blankets, hygiene kits, and is establishing various community water filtration units to ensure safe drinking water for affected families. The organization has transported more than 98 tons of essential supplies to Venezuela via their cargo aircraft, a Boeing 767, and remains committed to using this asset to deliver further assistance to the nation.

The challenges faced by the victims are substantial, and Samaritan’s Purse has committed itself to meeting both the physical and spiritual needs of those suffering. The organization is also keen to facilitate media coverage of their operations, providing opportunities for interviews with key personnel, including Dr. Elliott Tenpenny, the director of the International Health Unit currently on the ground in Venezuela, and Thomas Ovington, the team leader deployed to assist in the crisis.

Franklin Graham reminded the public of the ongoing crisis, stating, “The fatalities are expected to rise, and continuous prayers for the people of Venezuela are necessary.” With a focus on humanitarian assistance, Samaritan's Purse operates in over 100 countries to support victims of war, disaster, disease, poverty, famine, and persecution.
