Water Management Corporation Hosts Traditional Water-Splashing Event to Combat Summer Heat

Water Management Corporation Holds Annual Water-Splashing Event

The Water Management Corporation, headquartered in Setagaya, Tokyo, has announced its third annual water-splashing event from August 1 to August 7, coinciding with the Ministry of Land, Infrastructure, Transport and Tourism's Water Week. This initiative aims to alleviate extreme summer heat across Japan through community participation and environmental awareness.

Event Overview

The water-splashing event included employees from the Water Management Corporation, which specializes in designing, constructing, and managing water and environmental facilities. Approximately 40 employees gathered at the newly renovated entrance fountain within the corporate headquarters to utilize recycled water for the event. The results were impressive: temperature readings plummeted from 36.0°C to 34.6°C at the headquarters, and from 41.2°C to 36.0°C at the Numazu Engineering Innovation Center in Shizuoka Prefecture.

Background of the Event

This year marks the 50th anniversary of the government's declaration of August 1 as Water Day and the subsequent week as Water Week. Initiated in 2003 by the Ministry of Land, Infrastructure, Transport and Tourism and supported by entities such as the Tokyo Metropolitan Government, the water-splashing campaign encourages citizens to collectively lower summer temperatures using leftover bathwater and rainwater, creating a cooling effect in urban areas.

The Water Management Corporation has embraced this campaign, adhering strictly to the guidelines established by the Ministry. The emphasis is placed on: 1) Not using tap water directly, 2) No additional costs, 3) Participating in cool attire, and 4) Measuring the cooling impact.

The significance of Water Week extends beyond just cooling down; it serves as a reminder of the importance of water conservation and resource management. Various events are organized to raise awareness about water's finite nature and the necessity for its sustainable development.

Event Specifics

  • - Date: August 4 (Tuesday) from 8:30 AM
  • - Meeting Location: Lobby of the corporate headquarters
  • - Sponsoring Events: August 3 (Monday) to August 7 (Friday) across various offices and sites

Effective Water-Splashing Tips

When conducting water-splashing activities, certain conditions can enhance their effectiveness:
  • - Locations: Best done on surfaces such as concrete and asphalt that retain heat. Furthermore, spraying walls can help reduce ambient temperature.
  • - Methods: Use cleaned and reused water responsibly, avoiding waste. Buckets, basins, or empty bottles may serve as convenient vessels for dispersing water lightly over the ground.
  • - Timing: Morning or evening sessions are preferable for reducing evaporation rates and extending the cooling effect.
