Barry Ohlson Takes the Helm at Cox Enterprises

Cox Enterprises has recently announced the appointment of Barry Ohlson as the Senior Vice President of Public Policy and Government Affairs. This strategic decision, which took effect on January 1, marks a significant step for the company as it seeks to navigate the complex landscape of regulatory and legislative challenges that define the modern business environment.

In his new role, Ohlson will oversee the public policy office at Cox, effectively serving as the company's principal voice in government matters. His responsibilities will include steering the company's advocacy initiatives, which aim to promote Cox’s interests while simultaneously reducing risks associated with political shifts and regulatory changes. Through collaborative efforts with key partners, Ohlson is expected to unlock new opportunities that align with the company's objectives—advocacy being a core component of these strategies.

Jennifer Hightower, Executive Vice President and Chief Legal Officer at Cox Enterprises, expressed confidence in Ohlson’s capabilities. “Barry's vast expertise in government relations, along with his unwavering commitment to collaboration, make him the ideal leader to guide our advocacy efforts,” Hightower stated. Under his leadership, the company will enhance its engagement with policymakers, government officials, and trade associations, ensuring that it remains at the forefront of critical issues affecting the business.

A Wealth of Experience

With over three decades of extensive experience in regulatory and government affairs, Barry Ohlson brings a wealth of knowledge and insight to his new role. Prior to this appointment, he served as the Vice President of Regulatory Affairs, where he was instrumental in shaping Cox's regulatory agenda and representing the organization before federal decision-makers and industry groups. His history with the company dates back to 2010, following his tenure as a partner at Wilkinson Barker Knauer, LLP, and more than six years at the Federal Communications Commission (FCC).

Ohlson’s leadership credentials are further validated by his notable position as a past president of the Federal Communications Bar Association (FCBA). His nearly ten-year service on the FCBA Executive Committee illustrates his prominent standing in the industry. He holds a bachelor’s degree from William & Mary and a law degree from George Washington University, equipping him to navigate the intricate world of public policy effectively.
