Nordic Semiconductor Unveils Advanced Battery Health Monitoring for IoT Devices

Nordic Semiconductor, a global leader in low-power wireless connectivity solutions, recently announced its groundbreaking product, the Nordic Fuel Gauge v2.0, during the Embedded World 2026 in Nuremberg, Germany. This latest innovation serves as a vital upgrade to the existing fuel gauge software, specifically designed for their award-winning nPM1300 and nPM1304 Power Management ICs. This feature plays a crucial role in tracking charging cycles, observing long-term degradation trends, and ensuring precision even as the battery ages.

For scenarios where users frequently swap out batteries, Nordic’s algorithm can manage multiple batteries concurrently, keeping tabs on the health status of each pack. Unlike traditional fuel gauge ICs that rely on fixed models or coulomb counting—which can alter over time—the Nordic solution utilizes the nPM1300’s integrated voltage, temperature, and current measurements along with an intelligent host-based algorithm. This design offers system-level precision at a reduced cost while minimizing material complexity, significantly lowering energy consumption during sleep modes and providing substantial savings compared to competitor solutions.
