Discover the Thrilling New Horror Category in SSFF & ASIA 2025

A Groundbreaking Introduction: The Horror & Suspense Category at SSFF & ASIA 2025

The Short Short Film Festival & Asia (SSFF & ASIA), recognized by the American Academy Awards, is ready to take a bold step into the world of fear and fright with the introduction of its inaugural "Horror & Suspense" category in 2025. In collaboration with Creative Guardian Inc. (CRG), a creator agency supporting various genres of creative activities, this innovative category aims to spotlight exceptional horror and suspense films submitted to the festival.

The festival will not only feature official competition screenings but also provide online streaming access to the selected submissions. Among the exciting developments is the establishment of the "Great Shock Award supported by CRG," which will offer a prize of 500,000 yen to the most outstanding horror and suspense work, as determined by a selected panel. This shows a strong commitment to recognizing talent and innovation within this genre.

A total of 11 nominated films will be showcased on the SSFF & ASIA Online Grand Theater from May 28 to June 11, 2025. Additionally, the finalists will be announced during a special screening event on May 30 titled “The Boundary Between Fear and Pleasure: Screening & Talk Event,” which aims to engage audiences further.

Among the notable entries is "KABURAGI," directed by Riisa Naka, who not only directs but also stars in the film, alongside Robert Akiyama. This suspenseful piece delves into the psychological aftermath of a scandal involving a photographer and an actress, exploring themes of ambition and moral quandaries in the world of media.

Also gracing the lineup are chilling tales such as "Twitter," which tackles social media's sinister side, and "Sorry, I Am No Help To You!" featuring a darkly comedic twist on a post-apocalyptic zombie scenario. The title promises an enthralling experience with each narrative designed to elicit both fear and contemplation.

The festival’s approach is further enriched by a notable presenter, Yasushi Fukuda, a celebrated scriptwriter known for his works on popular TV dramas like "HERO" and "Galileo." Fukuda expressed his apprehension yet respect for the horror genre, stating, “I actually find horror quite frightening. I can appreciate suspense, but horror really scares me. Respect goes out to those who can create it. I’m eagerly awaiting this horror and suspense category!” His words underline the caliber of creative storytelling in Japanese cinema today.

As part of its mission, SSFF & ASIA aims to cultivate and showcase the talents of emerging filmmakers in Japan, leveraging the dazzling reputation of Japanese horror—often termed "J-Horror" globally. The newly established Horror & Suspense category will further pave paths for international recognition and networking opportunities for young creators. This is crucial for inviting a broader audience to experience and appreciate the depth of Japanese horror cinematography.

This compelling celebration of horror will conclude with the SSFF & ASIA 2025 Award Ceremony on June 11, 2025, where the "Great Shock Award" winner will be announced. As excitement builds, the festival promises a thrilling experience exploring the rare and unsettling narratives of contemporary horror.

In conjunction with the event, a dedicated screening on May 30 will feature horror buffs like former Nogizaka46 member Rina Ikoma, a rising actor, and the urban boys' Youtube sensation Yasuhiro Hayase, known for his collection of cursed objects. Together with these engaging figures in horror culture, the event aims to offer audiences a night to remember filled with gleeful terror.

The festival runs from April 24 to June 30, 2025, offering both online access and in-person screenings to ensure that everyone can experience these visionary films. Ticket sales are set to commence on April 24, promising an event that horror fans will not want to miss.
