UT San Antonio Launches Dramatic Arts Program with Little Shop of Horrors

The University of Texas at San Antonio (UTSA) is set to enthrall audiences with its inaugural production of the cult classic musical, "Little Shop of Horrors," at the Buena Vista Theater. This much-anticipated event marks the launch of UTSA's Dramatic Arts program, which aims to elevate the standards of theater education in Texas.

The story revolves around Seymour, a timid florist who stumbles upon a mysterious plant that not only garners him fame but also demands a gruesome price for its existence. This unique blend of sci-fi and comedy, backed by the rock-and-roll vibes of the 1960s, invites audiences on a captivating journey about ambition and the costs that often accompany success.

For this production, UTSA will utilize the acclaimed Audrey II puppets originally crafted for the Broadway's 2003 rendition of the show. These extraordinary puppets, known for their monster-like demeanor, will be rented from Monkey Boys Productions and are a vital part of what makes the show visually striking. The performance will be accompanied by a live orchestra, enhancing the already immersive experience made possible by the intimate 300-seat venue.

Bradley Freeman Jr., an assistant professor of practice in Film and Media at UTSA and the director of the show, expressed his excitement, emphasizing the significance of puppetry in live performances. "It’s in our nature to personify and anthropomorphize the things around us," Freeman stated. He is enthusiastic about allowing community members, especially students and families, to engage with the beautifully designed puppets.

UT San Antonio is notable for hosting the only four-year degree program in dramatic arts and theatre within the city. Launched last fall, this undergraduate program aims to cater to the burgeoning film industry in Texas by providing high-quality industry training. Students are offered practical experiences through curated internships and specialized instruction that encompasses both stage and screen technologies.

The faculty includes seasoned industry professionals such as Victor Trevino and Saagar Shaikh, who bring a wealth of experience from major productions for platforms like Disney+, HBO Max, and Netflix to the classroom setting. Their insights and expertise ensure that students receive education that is both current and relevant.

Paul Ardoin, the director of the Dramatic Arts program and one of the producers of "Little Shop of Horrors," describes the production as a fabulous way to introduce a promising new program, capitalizing on top-notch facilities and talented performers. The production team even embarked on a memorable road trip across the country to retrieve the iconic Audrey II puppets, visiting notable theater cities like New York and Atlanta to pay homage to the vibrant theater culture.

"The establishment of a Dramatic Arts program is truly a dream realized for San Antonio," Ardoin shared. "Our rendition of 'Little Shop of Horrors' presents a rare opportunity for audiences to immerse themselves in high-quality American musical theater while also showcasing the innovative spirit of our progressive program. It’s vital for keeping talented artists in Texas and bolstering our film industry."

Performances of "Little Shop of Horrors" will be held at 2 PM and 7 PM from April 10 to April 26, offering a total of ten shows. Tickets are currently available for purchase on the Buena Vista Theater website. This event promises not just to entertain but also to strengthen the arts community, making it a landmark moment for UT San Antonio and its Dramatic Arts program.
