In a groundbreaking development, GE Vernova Inc. (NYSE: GEV) has secured an order to supply its Class H natural gas-fired combined cycle power generation technology for Generadora San Felipe Limited's new plant. Located in the picturesque Punta Caucedo area of Boca Chica, Dominican Republic, this facility will contribute a substantial 470 megawatts (MW) of power to the grid. This project marks a significant milestone as GE Vernova’s first H-Class gas turbine order in the Caribbean, underscoring its commitment to supporting the region's energy transition.

The Dominican Republic is known for its rapid economic growth, currently one of the fastest expanders in Latin America. In recent years, the country has made significant strides in transitioning from oil-based electricity generation to cleaner, more reliable natural gas sources. Today, natural gas accounts for nearly half of the nation’s energy production, playing a pivotal role in achieving its climate ambitions and sustainable development goals.

Antonio Ramírez, General Manager of Generadora San Felipe, expressed excitement over the new power plant, noting, "Our plant, powered by GE Vernova’s highly efficient H-Class technology, will support our efforts to provide less carbon-intensive and more reliable electricity, which is critical for the country's productivity growth and people’s well-being." The San Felipe power plant will feature a sophisticated multi-shaft generator setup. It includes a GE Vernova 7HA.02 gas turbine, paired with an H65 generator, as well as an STF-A650 steam turbine coupled with an H35 generator. Additionally, a triple-pressure heat recovery steam generator (HRSG) enhances efficiency by utilizing waste heat.

The ambition behind the San Felipe project is echoed by Dave Ross, President of GE Vernova’s Gas Power division for the Americas. He stated, "This development is a very ambitious project, and we are proud to support it. Once completed, the plant is expected to be one of the most efficient in the Caribbean and can be configured with carbon capture technologies to further mitigate carbon dioxide emissions."
