The 18th IIBC High School English Essay Contest Launches
The Institute for International Business Communication (IIBC), headquartered in Nakano, Tokyo, is excited to announce the upcoming
18th IIBC High School English Essay Contest. Commencing on
July 1, 2026, at 10 AM, this annual competition aims to inspire high school students to articulate their thoughts and opinions in English. The contest is supported by the Japan-America Society and the International Educational Promotion Foundation, with further backing from Japan's Ministry of Education, Culture, Sports, Science and Technology, and the Ministry of Foreign Affairs.
Inaugurated in 2009 to commemorate the
30th anniversary of the TOEIC Listening & Reading Test, the contest has successfully created opportunities for students to enhance their English expression skills. The number of submissions has steadily increased, with 2025 witnessing a record high of
433 submissions from 224 schools in the individual category and
3,936 submissions from 68 schools in the group category. This growth reflects the contest's importance in fostering English expression among high schoolers in Japan.
Theme and Objective
This year's theme is “
Connecting Hearts, Expanding Worlds: Resonance Through Communication.” This theme encapsulates the idea of understanding and embracing differences in values and backgrounds through communication, thereby expanding one's worldview. Especially in today's society influenced by the rise of AI, the essence of heartfelt communication remains crucial. The contest encourages students to re-examine this connection of hearts in the context of modern challenges, pushing them to express their thoughts creatively and meaningfully.
