Cinematic Quantum: The Innovative Eye of a Cinematographer
The Upcoming Master Class in Mexico
From September 3 to September 6, 2026, the event "Semana AMC" by the Mexican Association of Cinematographers (AMC) will take place. This will coincide with a significant international educational project, "Cinematic Quantum (CQ)", run in collaboration between the Japan Society of Cinematographers (JSC), the Agency for Cultural Affairs of Japan, and the Japan Arts Council. This initiative aims to foster cultural exchanges between cinematographers from Japan and abroad and research new modes of visual expression specifically for the next generation of filmmakers. CQ is not just about technical education; its goal is to nurture cinematographers who can transmit their storytelling through a global lens by incorporating rich cultural perspectives.
Why Mexico, Why Now?
In recent years, Mexican cinematographers have made a tremendous impact in the film industry, showcasing their unparalleled skills. Their expertise encompasses the delicate use of natural light, camera work that captures the nuances of space and emotion, and long takes that reflect human introspection. Furthermore, they have successfully created visual narratives that balance societal issues with deeply personal experiences. Mexico has enriched the cinematic world with a fresh culture of visual storytelling.
CQ aims to understand how elements such as territory, religion, perspectives on life and death, urban settings, and family relationships intertwine with cinematic expression. For Japanese cinematographers, this experience in Mexico is not merely an "overseas training" venture. The JSC believes that Mexico will help express the "value of visual storytelling" more effectively. Mexican cinematographers have altered the cinematic landscape not merely through technical capability but by redefining how humanity is perceived on-screen. In contrast, while Japan boasts excellent technical craftsmanship, there exist barriers that may be difficult to overcome without broader cultural understanding.
The Strength of Mexican Cinematic Expression
Mexican cinematographers excel in creating visually compelling art not just for its aesthetics but also for their ability to embed thoughts and feelings into the frame. They convey light and shadow, silence, distance, humidity, urbanity, violence, faith, and family as integral emotions that establish a connection with viewers.
Bridging the Gap: Similar Sensibilities between Japan and Mexico
At first glance, Japanese and Mexican cultures appear vastly different. However, both share significant similarities. This common ground suggests that Japanese cinematographers may grasp the language of visual storytelling that Mexico offers. CQ is not merely about acquiring skills; it seeks to bridge the tranquility of Japanese narratives with the intensity of Mexican expression. The goal is to merge these two dimensions to create a new visual language that resonates on multiple levels.
CQ Master Class Mexico is not just a "learning arena" but rather a space for dialogue. The intention is to engage in conversation rather than simply absorb information. Through interactions with cinematographers from AMC and the American Society of Cinematographers (ASC), participants will have the opportunity to explore important questions such as:
- - What are the aspirations of global Directors of Photography (DPs)?
- - Why do their films evoke powerful emotions?
The master class will feature interactions with at least one influential cinematographer (DP) from AMC and ASC, with final speaker selections expected to be made three to four weeks before the event.
