British Library Partners with Clarivate

In a significant move towards improving library services, the British Library has announced a partnership with Clarivate Plc, a renowned global provider of transformative intelligence. This collaboration marks a new chapter as the British Library aims to enhance the accessibility and security of its resources through advanced library management and discovery platforms.

Embracing Modern Solutions

The British Library, established in 1973 and known for its vast collection of approximately 170 million items including books, manuscripts, and digital publications, has decided to implement sophisticated tools from Clarivate, specifically the Alma, Primo VE, and Rapido platforms. This transition aims to build a more cohesive and streamlined user experience while simplifying library operations.

Having worked together for over 20 years, providing services through the Aleph Library Management System and Primo discovery services, the British Library is now set to leverage Clarivate's next-generation library services platform. This transition signifies the library's commitment to evolving alongside technological advancements in the field of library sciences.

Enhancing User Experience

The adoption of Alma will make the British Library the 43rd national and state library globally to utilize this platform. This move is expected to boost the user experience significantly by uniting various library processes under one system, thus facilitating easier access to the library’s vast resources. Liz Jolly, Chief Librarian at the British Library, expressed enthusiasm about this development, emphasizing the goal of restoring and enhancing access to library collections.

“By implementing Alma, Primo VE, and Rapido, we aim to restore and improve access to our collection, enhancing our support for research and making knowledge accessible to everyone,” Jolly stated.

Streamlined Resource Sharing

In addition to improving user access, the British Library has also opted for Rapido to modernize its interlibrary loan system. This strategic choice will enhance resource sharing capabilities among academic and research institutions, reflecting a strong commitment to supporting collaboration in the scholarly community.

Bar Veinstein, President of Academia and Government at Clarivate, echoed the importance of this partnership, stating, “Our collaboration will foster learning and discovery for future generations and make the United Kingdom's rich heritage accessible to researchers, scholars, and the public.”

A Vision for the Future

As the British Library embarks on this journey with Clarivate, there is a shared vision of advancing education and research through innovative technologies. Clarivate’s mission to provide comprehensive insights and analytics aligns with the library’s goal to facilitate a culture of learning and accessibility.

The incorporation of cutting-edge library services is poised to set new standards for how information is accessed and utilized within the British Library, ensuring that its rich resources are available to all. The collaboration symbolizes a pivotal step forward in modernizing one of the world’s largest libraries, ultimately benefiting users and advancing the library’s operational capabilities.
