McDermott Will & Schulte Unveils Major Expansion in Midtown Manhattan
In a bold move to enhance its presence in the competitive New York legal market, McDermott Will & Schulte has announced plans for an expansive new campus in Midtown Manhattan. This strategic decision reinforces the firm’s commitment to providing sophisticated legal services while growing its footprint in one of the world's most dynamic business hubs.
The firm has secured approximately 150,000 square feet at 343 Madison Avenue, a prestigious property located in the heart of Midtown. The new campus, which will span floors 31 through 37 of the development, is designed to significantly bolster McDermott's existing operations at One Vanderbilt. Upon completion, the two locations will seamlessly connect through Grand Central Terminal, creating a unified campus that enhances efficiency and collaboration among the firm’s extensive team of legal professionals.
The venture marks a significant milestone for McDermott, particularly following its recent merger with Schulte Roth & Zabel, which has dramatically multiplied its presence in New York City over the last decade. With this expansion, the firm is positioned to accommodate its growing clientele and further establish itself among the top ten largest law firms in New York.
Ira Coleman, Chairman of McDermott Will & Schulte, remarked, "New York is at the center of this growth and remains the premier market for high-stakes legal work globally. This expansion embodies our bold and agile approach as we focus on delivering exceptional value to our clients and enhancing working conditions for our employees."
The design of the new campus, crafted by the renowned architectural firm Kohn Pedersen Fox, promises to embed advanced sustainability features while fostering a vibrant workplace environment. This will include a unique hospitality-driven amenity program featuring a luxurious client lounge, terraces with breathtaking views of Midtown, and facilities tailored to modern workplace needs. The building’s green design, featuring zero on-site emissions and a high-efficiency air system, underlines the firm’s commitment to sustainability in its operations.
McDermott's new location aims to accommodate more than 330 offices and versatile conference spaces across seven floors, coupled with a stunning outdoor terrace. The firm plans to occupy the space by October 2029, assuring that it meets the evolving demands of the legal industry and their clients.
Furthermore, McDermott will also enhance its facilities at One Vanderbilt with the addition of more office space leading to 175 new offices by June 2027, positioning the firm to embrace future growth while reinforcing client relationships.
Hilary Spann, Executive Vice President of BXP’s New York region, expressed excitement about this new partnership, emphasizing that McDermott's move to 343 Madison Avenue reflects a broader industry trend toward investing in workplace environments that support growth and attract talent.
This expansion is more than a strategic business decision; it represents McDermott Will & Schulte’s vision of what a modern law firm should embody—a blend of innovation, collaboration, and client-centric focus. As the firm prepares for this transition, it is set to redefine service delivery in the legal profession, paving the way for sustained success in the ever-evolving landscape of the legal sector.
As McDermott Will & Schulte strengthens its position in New York, it reaffirms its dedication to offering unparalleled legal expertise and innovative solutions to complex challenges faced by leading organizations across the globe.
