New Power Line Installation by Illuminating Company to Boost Reliability in Avon Lake

New Power Line Installation in Avon Lake

In a significant move aimed at improving the electrical service for residents in Avon Lake, Ohio, the Illuminating Company, a subsidiary of FirstEnergy Corp. (NYSE: FE), has commenced the construction of a new neighborhood power line. This initiative is expected to not only enhance reliability but also ensure that local consumers receive uninterrupted service, particularly during inclement weather conditions.

The project focuses on connecting approximately 700 customers in the Avon Lake area to a nearby upgraded substation, which features advanced automated reclosing devices. These devices act similarly to circuit breakers found in homes; they momentarily cut off power when issues arise and swiftly restore it within seconds, thus minimizing service interruptions. This modern technology streamlines the power restoration process, allowing staff to return service automatically instead of necessitating on-site inspections, enhancing operational efficiency and safety.

Torrence Hinton, the Ohio President of FirstEnergy, emphasized that this project is part of a broader strategy that involves several other investments destined to bolster reliable power delivery in local communities. He stated, "This project is one of many targeted investments our company is making in local communities to continue delivering reliable and safe power to our customers. We have dozens of similar projects in the works that will make a large positive impact on the communities we serve."

As part of the project, Illuminating Company crews have also initiated the installation of about 90 new utility poles and plan to replace one mile of outdated underground wiring. This work is anticipated to wrap up by June 2026 and is part of FirstEnergy’s larger Energize365 grid evolution program, where the company is investing a substantial $26 billion from 2024 through 2028 across its service areas to create a more intelligent and secure grid.

In total, the Illuminating Company is dedicated to serving over 750,000 customers across multiple counties, including Ashtabula, Cuyahoga, Geauga, Lake, and Lorain. Residents can follow the progress and updates regarding these improvements by checking out the Illuminating Company's social media platforms like Twitter (@IlluminatingCo) and Facebook.

With such substantial investments in infrastructure and technology, FirstEnergy's commitment to integrity, safety, and operational excellence shines through, affirming its position as one of the nation's largest investor-owned electric systems, servicing more than six million customers in states like Ohio, Pennsylvania, New Jersey, West Virginia, Maryland, and New York.

This new initiative is expected to have a positive ripple effect in the community, improving the resiliency of the local electric grid and elevating the overall quality of customer care. Those living in the Avon Lake area can look forward to enhanced service reliability that can withstand the unpredictability of Ohio's weather, thus ensuring that power remains available when it’s needed most.
