Our Blood Institute Collaborates with Velico on Advanced Education Program for Blood Centers

Our Blood Institute Joins Velico's Blood Center Education Program

On March 19, 2025, Velico Medical, Inc. announced a significant partnership with Our Blood Institute (OBI), marking a pivotal moment in blood donation and emergency medical response. OBI is recognized as the sixth-largest independent blood repository in the United States, and its involvement in Velico’s Blood Center Education Program (BCEP) aims to revolutionize how blood is collected, processed, and utilized in emergency situations.

The BCEP is designed to provide strategic blood center partners with practical experience on the FrontlineODP™ (On Demand Plasma) system, which is pivotal for spray drying plasma. Through this collaboration, OBI will assess the system's integration into their blood component production operations, offering valuable insights on both the commissioning and operational facets of this innovative technology.

Commitment to Innovation and Emergency Preparedness

As emphasized by Richard Meehan, President and CEO of Velico, this alliance highlights a mutual dedication to innovation, education, and enhancing emergency preparedness in prehospital blood transfusion. The introduction of the Frontline ODP™ system aims to bolster the resilience of the U.S. blood supply, thereby becoming an essential resource for emergency medical services.

Dr. John Armitage, president and CEO of OBI, echoed this sentiment, stating, "Every second counts when treating heavily bleeding patients." OBI's commitment to advancing this technology could dramatically enhance emergency responses for EMS agencies, the military, and other organizations that handle life-threatening situations in the field, well before patients reach hospital care.

Understanding FrontlineODP™ Technology

Preventable deaths due to hemorrhage following traumatic incidents remain a pressing global issue, drawing the focus of trauma surgeons, emergency medical personnel, and governments alike. Velico has committed itself to addressing this crisis with the Frontline ODP™ technology—a system that allows for easy storage and quick rehydration of plasma. Unlike traditional plasma products that require refrigeration, FrontlineODP™ can be kept at room temperature, facilitating its use in rugged conditions such as rural medical facilities and emergency environments.

The ability to rapidly prepare this plasma product (ready for transfusion in roughly 2½ minutes) is invaluable in critical situations where conventional plasma is either inaccessible or impractical. This investigational device currently remains limited in its use by federal law, pending further approvals, but its potential to save lives is clear.

Velico: Pioneering Blood Technology Innovations

Headquartered in Beverly, Massachusetts, Velico is a private medical technology firm that aims to eradicate preventable deaths from bleeding through the development of groundbreaking medical solutions. Their project is bolstered by funding from the Department of Health and Human Services and the Biomedical Advanced Research and Development Authority, reflecting a robust commitment to enhancing medical response capabilities nationally.

Through strategic partnerships with civilian executives, military leaders, and trauma specialists, Velico is positioned to redefine the standards within the transfusion medicine sector. With OBI as a key ally, their collaborative efforts are set to improve emergency response and patient outcomes across the nation.
