Crossty Holdings' Ambitious GX Journey
Crossty Holdings, based in Sapporo, Hokkaido, has taken a significant step towards environmental sustainability by declaring its goal of achieving carbon neutrality by 2040. This ambitious commitment is backed by a comprehensive carbon reduction strategy, focusing on greenhouse gas (GHG) emissions from their core subsidiary, Ecotec, alongside its eight other affiliated companies.
Overview of the Initiative
The initiative centered on the visualization of GHG emissions (Scope 1 and Scope 2), which has now been completed for all of Ecotec's operational locations, including Sapporo, Tomakomai in Hokkaido, Sendai in Miyagi Prefecture, and Kawaguchi in Saitama Prefecture. This pioneering project is notable within the Hokkaido construction industry, marking a rare occurrence where a systematic approach to emission tracking and long-term planning has been implemented.
To achieve this, Ecotec and Crossty Holdings collaborated with the climate tech company Ecoulu, whose GX support service has been instrumental in analyzing energy usage and developing emissions reduction strategies. By employing such comprehensive practices, the holding company is poised to not only enhance its own operational efficiency but also lead as an exemplary model for regional green transformation (GX).
Addressing Industry Challenges
The construction sector is facing increasing pressure to understand and reduce GHG emissions. Major construction clients, particularly large housing manufacturers, are now demanding emissions calculations and reduction plans from their subcontractors. This growing trend necessitates swift action from Crossty Holdings to align with industry standards and its own operational realities.
Particular challenges exist for companies operating in Hokkaido, where winter heating demands and transport fuel usage tend to increase emissions. Given the specialized knowledge required for emissions assessment and planning, it becomes daunting for small and medium-sized enterprises (SMEs) to address these issues independently. Recognizing these circumstances, Crossty Holdings is laying the groundwork for implementing GX company-wide, ensuring sustainable environmental practices are embedded into the organizational structure.
Steps Toward Carbon Reduction
The project with Ecoulu has established a clear roadmap for the group’s decarbonization efforts:
1. Gather and organize electricity and fuel data from all Ecotec locations.
2. Calculate Scope 1-2 emissions.
3. Analyze emissions per revenue unit to visualize the emission structure.
4. Create a GX roadmap for 2030 and 2040 based on the analyzed data.
This strategic framework prioritizes practical measures, such as enhancing energy efficiency, transitioning to renewable energy sources, electrifying heating and hot water systems, and electrifying vehicles, among others.
Key Outcomes Achieved
One notable achievement from this initiative includes the visualization of a total of 447.77 t-CO₂ in emissions. With this data, Crossty Holdings has outlined ambitious long-term goals:
- - By 2030: Achieve zero Scope 2 emissions (100% renewable energy).
- - By 2040: Achieve carbon neutrality for the entire group.
These goals are to be met through a phased approach, ensuring that on-site burdens are minimized while effectively managing the transition towards achieving these objectives.
Future Directions
Emissions data analysis has revealed areas for improvement at individual sites, highlighting opportunities where substantial reductions can be made. This analytical tool will enable Crossty Holdings to rank priorities based on each site’s operational characteristics, thus structuring a manageable plan for short-term to long-term actions.
As Hidetaka Hayashi, the President of Crossty Holdings, puts it, “By visualizing our GHG emissions, we have not only established a clear plan to achieve carbon neutrality by 2040, but we are also preparing ourselves for the upcoming regulations requiring emission reductions by 2027 among our major clients.” This initiative marks a pivotal step towards fostering a model of sustainable construction practices in the community.
Crossty Holdings aims to lead the GX movement in Hokkaido by utilizing its substantial experience and establishing a robust framework that facilitates meaningful decarbonization initiatives across the group. With the support of Ecoulu and other stakeholders, this journey will bring forth an era where sustainable practices in construction are the norm rather than the exception.
Collaboration with Ecoulu
Ecoulu, under the leadership of CEO Yasuhiko Emori, is dedicated to realizing a world where carbon neutrality is an everyday expectation. Their expertise in constructing effective GX models has provided crucial backing to Crossty Holdings, ensuring that the required systems are not just theoretical but practically achievable. Both companies share a vision of a sustainable future, striving to implement a robust structure that supports proactive environmental responsibility within construction industry practices.
Together, they are laying the groundwork for a sustainable future that aligns environmental goals with operational excellence in the construction sector.
