Okayama University Collaborates on Second Smart Healthcare Initiative

On May 27, 2025, Okayama University formalized an agreement with Masuda City and the Masuda City Medical Association to initiate the second phase of the Smart Healthcare Promotion Project. The signing ceremony took place at Masuda City Hall and was attended by Okayama University's President Yasutomo Nasu, Masuda City Mayor Hiroaki Yamamoto, and Masuda City Medical Association President Chikara Ohata.

This partnership builds on a previous agreement made in 2020, focused on addressing health challenges in the region, particularly the prevention of strokes. By employing digital home blood pressure monitors, community members can manage their blood pressure and provide data for research conducted by Professor Hideyuki Kanda from the Okayama University Graduate School of Medicine. This new agreement aims to strengthen collaboration among the three parties and enhance long-term data collection efforts.

During the signing event, President Nasu expressed his commitment to utilizing digital tools to foster the Digital Rural City National Strategy, emphasizing that their research results not only benefit the future of Masuda but contribute significantly to the overall healthcare and well-being of Japan's citizens. He highlighted the historical connection with Masuda city, the birthplace of Dr. Hajime Shuhachi, an influential figure in Okayama University's history.

In his address, Nasu elaborated on the importance of deepening ties with the region, stating, "We aim to contribute to the health promotion of local citizens. The results of our studies will pave the way for advancements in medical practices throughout Japan."

Prior to the agreement's signing, President Nasu visited the Hajime Shuhachi Memorial Museum, emphasizing the legacy of Dr. Shuhachi, who graduated from Okayama University's predecessor and was pivotal in the development of chemotherapy in collaboration with Nobel laureate Paul Ehrlich.
