A Dog's Sudden Reaction to Agave Plant: What Pet Owners Should Know

The Incident

Each morning, Kathi allows Kiki to roam outside while it’s still dark, believing it’s a safe routine. However, one day, Kiki returned with a soaked face, sparking concern in Kathi. Initially, they could not determine what had happened. It was only when daylight broke that they discovered Kiki had dug up and chewed on their agave plant. In honor of National Tequila Day on July 24, the Pet Poison Helpline conducted a review of similar incidents involving pets and agave. Surprisingly, while reactions to agave are uncommon, they can lead to severe health issues in certain animals.

Dr. Renee Schmid, a veterinary toxicologist at the Pet Poison Helpline, confirmed that Kiki likely had an adverse reaction to the sap from the agave plant. The irritants in the sap can lead to distressing symptoms such as hives, facial swelling, and skin irritation. Interestingly, while large grazing animals can experience liver failure due to agave, dogs typically only display symptoms related to skin irritation and gastrointestinal upset.

Treatment and Care

Upon examining Kiki, the veterinary team created a treatment strategy tailored to her needs. With Kiki under sedation, the veterinarians painstakingly scrubbed Kiki's face to remove any remaining sap. They administered antibiotics for infection, pain medications for her discomfort, and an antihistamine, along with a short-acting steroid to mitigate the severity of her reaction. The swift action was critical, as Kiki was not only in pain from the swelling but also struggled to eat due to irritation caused by the sharp spines of the agave leaves.

During her stay at the hospital, Kathi noticed other pet owners grappling with the financial burdens of veterinary care. She observed a young couple indecisively discussing their pet’s treatment expenses with staff. Kathi took it upon herself to contribute to a local fund set up to assist struggling pet owners, ensuring that the support stayed within their community.

Fortunately, Kiki recovered fully and has since resumed her adventurous explorations in the yard. Reflecting on the incident, Kathi has become exceptionally vigilant at night, keen to protect Kiki from further misadventures.
