Smilegate and Kodansha Collaborate on 'Dead Account' Game

On October 10th, Smilegate announced a license agreement with Kodansha, a leading Japanese publisher, to develop a game based on the popular manga 'Dead Account.' This agreement allows Smilegate to take charge of the global publishing of their upcoming title, 'Dead Account: Two Blue Flames.'

Game Features and Development

The new game will be a team-based roguelike that combines character collection elements with character growth. It aims to faithfully reflect the original story and world of 'Dead Account,' and deliver an engaging gaming experience.

Development is being handled by IAN Games, a group with extensive experience in game development, known for their work on titles like 'Seven Knights.' The company is co-led by Park Yong-jae and Jo Kyung-joo. Currently, the game is being developed as a cross-platform title for both mobile devices and the STOVE (PC) platform, with key content and information set to be revealed progressively.

Original Manga's Backstory

The original manga 'Dead Account' made its debut in 2023 and is written by Shizuka Watanabe, known for popular works like 'Real Account' and 'The Trick Dedicated to the Witch.' The storyline revolves around the protagonist, Aoi Enjo, who enrolls in the Yaden Academy to combat ghosts resurrected from deceased social media accounts. The plot resonates with contemporary issues and has gained considerable attention due to its intense battle action, appealing particularly to a younger audience.

Fans can look forward to an animated series adaptation scheduled to air on TV Asahi-affiliated networks nationwide from January 2026, further building anticipation for those who follow the original work.

Executive Insights

Oh Byeong-jin, head of Smilegate, expressed enthusiasm about the project, stating, "The adaptation of 'Dead Account' transcends mere IP expansion. We anticipate providing fresh experiences for both fans of the original material and gamers. With our publishing expertise, we aim to elevate 'Dead Account' into a global title, while continuing to pursue collaborations with various cultural contents."

Meanwhile, Shin Furukawa from Kodansha emphasized the unique narrative and world of 'Dead Account,' remarking that this gaming project will amplify the story's allure and offer fans new experiences.

As the release date approaches, excitement continues to build around 'Dead Account: Two Blue Flames,' a project that promises to bring the captivating elements of the manga to the gaming world appreciably.
