The World of Mamepo: A Journey into Japanese Folklore

From September 25, 2025, to November 24, 2025, SFT GALLERY, located within the National Art Center in Tokyo, will host a remarkable exhibition featuring Mamepo wallets by ies design. These wallets, crafted by designer Mikiko Nakarai, draw inspiration from Japan's rich folklore filled with captivating yet eerie creatures that have fascinated generations.

Mamepo, with its distinct mascot features, serves more than just a practical purpose. The design utilizes repurposed denim, ensuring durability and ease of use, making it the perfect companion for everyday essentials such as cards, keys, and cash. This wallet's compact size allows for effortless access, embodying both function and aesthetic charm.

The exhibition includes large leather artworks specifically created for this event, showcasing the artistry behind Mamepo. Attendees will also get to view sketches, tools used in the creative process, and even encounter one of the unique yokai characters crafted by Mikiko Nakarai – the Kage Uzumaki (霞渦目). This ethereal creature is not just a conversation starter but a reminder to be aware of the whimsical world that surrounds us.

The allure of 'scary things', a recurring theme in Japanese folklore, appeals to our innate curiosity. From fearsome yokai to menacing masks displayed in Japanese homes, this exhibition aligns closely with that idea. The exhibition will showcase a total of 273 centimeters of art made from high-quality Japanese leather, alongside the Mamepo wallets available for purchase. Nakarai’s philosophy emphasizes creating products that foster a deep connection with users, allowing each wallet to be a round, convenient companion that brings joy and companionship to its owner.

Among the enchanting characters that will also be featured are the evening dusk yokai Kiyohime Shinja (清姫真蛇), known for transforming all that is imagined into fearsome forms, and the elusive Kemuri Neko (煙猫), a cat that seemingly disappears right before your eyes. Each character is representative of the intricate tales woven through Japanese culture, displaying how folklore can shape design.
