Recent findings from the Charities Aid Foundation (CAF) underscore a troubling trend: charities across the globe are experiencing an unprecedented rise in demand for their services. This demand is rising at a pace that many organizations are finding increasingly difficult to manage. The latest report, titled World Giving Report: Charity Insights, draws insights from a survey involving over 5,000 charity leaders in 33 countries. This report was unveiled during an event at the United Nations General Assembly, highlighting concerns amidst growing social challenges.

According to the CAF, approximately 67% of charities reported that they witnessed an increase in demand for their services over the past year. Alarmingly, nearly half of these organizations (47%) indicated that they are struggling to cope with this rising tide. The situation is particularly dire for charities in lower-income countries, where the squeeze is felt the hardest. Many charities are now prioritizing their services due to the escalating need for support, and about 18% have reported establishing waitlists to manage this surge in demand.

The challenges don’t stop there. When these charities were asked about their highest priorities, a significant 61% expressed concerns regarding their financial sustainability. In an effort to adapt to these challenges, 37% of charities have taken measures to diversify their income sources. Meanwhile, a troubling one-third (33%) resorted to using their savings or reserves to mitigate income shortfalls, and 25% have had to reduce staff or downsize their operations. This highlights the precarious position many charities find themselves in as they strive to meet growing needs while managing dwindling resources.

Furthermore, a mere 37% of the surveyed charities feel they are well-equipped for success in the coming three years. While larger charities often display more confidence, smaller organizations, particularly those delivering vital services, tend to express more pessimism about their futures.

Mark Greer, Managing Director at the Charities Aid Foundation, elaborated on the situation, noting, "Charities worldwide are making valiant efforts to support the needy but are hindered by increasingly difficult operating conditions. With rising global conflicts and the impacts of climate change, many organizations are overwhelmed by the number of people they need to assist."

Greer emphasized the importance of flexible and dependable funding, urging funders to consider the critical support that charities provide and the need for resilience in light of reduced government aid. He highlighted the value of charities investing time in building long-term resilience, drawing inspiration from those featured in the report who have successfully navigated similar challenges.
